Hey Guys,
First post here, I have a question about this guitar. Found it on craigslist and the guy is saying it's a mid 70's mustang. It's beat up but he said he would sell it for $200. Just making sure I'm not buying a $75 korean guitar with a fender tag on it. Going to try and restore it just want to get your guys opinions.

Thanks

Looks reasonable for a well used 70s Mustang, but it also looks like someone scratched the serial number off the headstock. I would have expect the serial number to be under the "Fender" part of the decal (and it should start with either an S6, S7, S8 or S9 for a 70s guitar). With the serial number missing I would say avoid it because it's likely stolen and someone's flipping it. Even a beat up 70s Mustang should bring at least $300-$500 these days (down from the post-Cobain heights).

That's good to know, I always thought the sn# was on the bottom of the neck. I'm going to go check it out and if the dude seems shady I'm going to pass on it.

Sound advice.

If you found a real one with the serial # for that price--it would be a very good deal.

You are right, DAMN! I finally thought I was going to find my diamond in the rough. Looks like I'll just have to get a 50's re-issue strat now.

Thinking about it again I guess it's possible that what I'm seeing in the photo is some kind of odd reflection and not a scratched-off spot, but I'm pretty sure that by the time Fender was using the black/white/black pickguards on Mustangs they should have the serial number on the headstock instead of the neck plate.

Yes it's absolutely real; however, with the serial number defaced there's a pretty high likelihood that it's been stolen at some point in it's life. At the very least it's bad karma to buy a stolen guitar, plus there could be legal issues for receiving stolen property or being forced to give it back (loosing the $200) should the rightful owner ever surface.
