Been thinking about getting a Jazzmaster or Jaguar, what are the differences in the pickup sounds? I play ska, reggae, and punk, which would be best?
Thanks

personal choice i guess... i'd play it before you buy it, rather than just judge from internet info (not that this doesn't have its use... ;) )
The jazzes that i've played sound a little more mellow and "woody", while jags seem more "jangle-y"
Dont forget to check out the jaguar classic player HH, it has coil tap blend pots instead of a rhythm circuit, people who have them (not me) love them!!

The Jazzmaster pups are King in my opinion..a matter of taste. I love the sound of the Jazzmaster on Presleys original studio recording of 'Little Sister' from 1961.

For those who like the creamy crunch of humbucking pickups but are also Jazzmaster aficionados, Seymour Duncan offers a humbucker housed under a Jazzmaster pickup cover.

hmm if you plays ska and reggae I recommend Jazzmaster. it has stability and sustain better than jaguar i think, hotter pickups, an Adjusto-Matic™ bridge, 9.5” fingerboard radius and etc. yeah I think ska and reggae requires a crunchy sound.

and for the punk I recommend jaguar, it has dual humbucking pickups, innovative electronics that include a blend-able coil tap for greater tonal versatility than ever, a 9.5” fingerboard radius.

I use jaguar, watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9SHhjEes2URT a cover with mistakes lol

Glad to read that about "Little Sister!" great guitar tone on that song. JM pickups are noisy as can be, but have really good clarity and punch, also better sustain than one might imagine.

The Jazzmaster and Jaguars have different necks as well, the Jags being the shorter scale neck, so you may want to consider that as well.

I don't know what it is about the retro Jag and Jazz body shape. It so, well, plain ugly and yet I just love it, much more than the elegant, beautiful balance of the Stratocaster.

If you're looking for Fender tone without that bite the Jazzmaster is a great choice - nice rhythm tone. I think the Jaguar tone is perfect for new wave, alternative, punk and obviously surf/lounge stuff. The Jaguar tone is classic Fender "chime and twang" (both pickups on full) characterized by a tight round tone with a slightly "clipped" decay totally unique to this guitar. Personally, it's my favorite Fender sound! :D
