I have become interested in the Fender Mustang guitars of the 60's; and I was wondering, since they were originally built to be student guitars, are they weaker than other models such as the Stratocaster? :?:

I mean like, you know, not as strong tone wise.
I guess they made better student guitars then.

Depends on what tone you are going for.

And you have to figure that the Mustangs were student instruments, but their price of $160 in 1964 is the equivalent of $1,275.82 in 2011.

So, yeah, you can actually get a mustang cheaper now than you could then, and you can get excellent low-end beginner guitars for a quarter of that price.

Well tone wise they would be in their own category since they are nothing like a Strat or a Tele.

The pickups were good so it would all be up to the player to produce some tones.

The Mustang is a short-scale guitar (24.75") and has a thinner body than the "professional" Fender instruments. The goofiness of its pickup-switching configuration is surpassed by only the Jaguar and it has the most miserable tremolo bridge ever devised (rivaled by the "Free Flyte" system used on some early '80s Strats). OTOH, the Duo-Sonic and Duo-Sonic II employ a hardtail bridge and a more sensible pickup-switching arrangement. They're actually pretty sweet instruments and a real joy to play.

I suppose they are a horse of a different color... They are definitely different (and not weaker) than the Strat. Thank you all for answering my question.
But I think I'll stick to my Stratocaster until I have over a thousand to spend :)

Like Arjay said, the Mustang Vibrato is a nightmare and near impossible to set up right so it won't go out of tune.Once you get used to the unorthodox switching system though you'll find that it's a great guitar.I used my '65 Mustang gigging because it has a funky tone for 60s covers and the short scale neck lessens the chance of hand fatigue especially for those with smaller hands.
