Is there such a thing as direct replacement tuning machines for this guitar without the plastic buttons? I love the look, but it just feels kinda cheap and i've already had to super glue the low E button once. Also, anyone have any opinions about refretting with jumbo frets? I've never been a fan of vintage frets. They kill my fingers. And, before anyone asks...Yes, i've had it set up by a professional. The action is low and intonation perfect. I just hate playing on vintage frets.

The re-issue Kluson Deluxe tuner set intended for a Strat or Tele will be a drop-on fit for your Mustang -- the keys are nickel-plated metal, like the housings, posts, shafts, bushings, and mounting screws.

+1 on the klusons! As for refretting a short scale guitar with jumbo frets.......I don't know. If the frets are too big, your intonation will be all over the place. Also, if they are too wide, someone like me with big hands and fingers would not have enough room for fretting on the higher frets! Vintage frets are not so bad ;) If this is not your main axe, I would suggest leaving the mustang alone so you have variety.

That's pretty much what came on my Mustang.

Yes, they were the standard for the Mustang as well as the Musicmaster and Duosonic (all with the plastic buttons). The Mustangs were switched to the Fender/Schaller "S" type keys sometime in '68 IIRC. Those buttons were chrome-plated metal, which gave the Mustang some added class.
