Hey everyone,
I was (hopefully) lucky enough to be given a 1964 Fender Mustang, all original from what I can tell, just needs a cleaning, well lets say dusting, I know better than trying to brighten the chrome parts and do anything that would depreciate the value. I have heard stories of both sides of the coin....one is its not worth that much cause it was Fenders "toy" guitar, and I have heard that it is a valuable guitar because it is pre CBS. The serial number is L45974. From what I have found doing research, I do know the serial number puts it as a 1964. The date stamp on the neck (where it is supposed to be) says 65 (there are other numbers but I didnt write them down before I put the neck back on, I will be taking it off again soon to write them down. I am selling the guitar because I am not a collector and I believe this guitar should go to a collector, and if it is valuable, I am going to take it to Ghrunn Guitars where it will be appreciated. If anyone knows anything on this guitar and can offer any opinions, I would be VERY thankful.
So, Thanks in advance for any help I can get on this,

Here is some pics of the Mustang....
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
These are the ones I took after I took the rusty $@! strings off, I plugged it in, tapped the pickups with a pick and got the tapping sound out of the amp so I know the pickups work good, tremolo works great, very nice tension in the arm, no cracking in the pots when turning them, I need to take a snap of the pickguard, I dont know if you can see it well, but it looks like wood and not plastic. I havent removed it yet, I just got home from New Orleans, where I got it from and it also arrived today, this morning before I even got home. Best part is it was free, along with 3 other guitars, a Tascam M-30 and a Quantum 2x12 amp with built in Chorus. But this by far is the cream of the crop!!!!

Yeah...good for free, but I was hoping for that diamond in the rough, ya know. I did find it odd that the neck plate dated it as a 64, but the neck stamp had 65. I was going through the Fender Vintage page trying to piece it all together, and now I may just have to piece it out when I sell it and see what happens. I do know the neck is an original from 65, no question there, guess I am gonna have to take it to Ghrunn's here in TN to see what is what on the body. The bridge in original, I know that, but as you said, the others are in question. Thanks Neven, You have been a GREAT help, have a GREAT WEEKEND my Friend!!

+1

A grand, tops. Mebbe $1200 if you have the OHSC.

Personally, I'd restore it, keep it, and play it.

In ten or fifteen years it might be worth two grand then.

Did you know that Jimi Hendrix owned a Mustang?
My advice is to make it playable, and hang on to her. Back in the day, I think they were considered "toys", but they are very good guitars!
KEEP HER !!!

Man you guys are making it hard not to keep it. I am taking it over to Ghrunn's Guitars in Nashville to get an estimate on getting it restored, as far as the tuners and original pickups, should I get the finish restored, get the electronics checked. I can tell pretty much the frets still have life left, so.... We willl see what Mr. Ghrunn has to say...I will keep you guys posted.

I thought it was a Duo-Sonic which he owned  But having a Mustang aswell wouldn't surprise me, either!

Farmhouse, congrats on the nice guitar. If you do plan to restore/refinish, what color finish were you thinking of giving her? Cheers

I think I am going to keep the finish the way it is and restore the electronics. I think redoing the finish would be a shame, especially givin' the way it has faded so cool over the years. So, I am going to do the tuners, electronics and get the OHSC and I will have a player, something I can pass down to my Son, although he plays the Keys, he still knows the value of the guitar sides of things...how can he not, he has been hearing it from me for almost is entire 18 years of life. He knows what he's getting into when he asks "Hey Dad..whats new?"

Got around to getting under the hood...very interesting things when you start messing around in THAT area. I ain't to sure I am gonna go wanna messing around with all of that silly stuff. I did, however, find the 2 pickups were dated within 2 days of each other and they are both 65's, neck is 11-12 and the bridge is 11-10. At least that was a cool find.ImageImage

Were you able to ascertain the guitar's original finish color?

Hey Arjay....nope, not at all man. it seems as though as it was a natural finish. If not, then the original owner sanded it down to original, but I don't think that was the case. There doesnt seem to be any sanding marks what so ever. I am going to take some detailed pics tomorrow and put them up for some better viewing. I have been very under the weather with my disability lately. I can barely move my neck, nor do any type of bending, so I am gonna try and take it easy for a few days and see if it cools out. If not, I may have to wait til I see the Dr on the 1st before I start trying to do any work on anything....and I have been just cleaning a 1990's Epi 335 Dot. Just waiting on the bridge for that one now, but I can't even start on the wiring solder for that one cause I cant physically do it.

It's doubtful that any '64 Mustang left Fullerton in a clear-coat natural finish. The bodies were all poplar back then -- not particularly well-suited to transparent lacquer due to this lumber's lackluster grain and a slightly greenish hue. It seems incredible that no original paint could be found in any of the body routs or the neck pocket -- perhaps the finish was removed chemically using mineral spirits, oven cleaner, brake fluid, or one of the other "miracle elixers". That might account for the bare wood overall and the lack of sanding marks.

the tuners are not original and in 1964 the mustang did not come in a natural finish only red white and blue.

It is pre cbs though so that should help drive up the value but i think you could get maybe 1200 out of it

Yea...I have made the painful decision, no pun intended, to go ahead and sell it as it is and not refinish it. My decision came while doing a re-wire job on a 335 and just the pain in my back, due to the 7 herniated disks, was unbearable, so trying to figure out how to do this one, plus the time it will take, it's just going to have to be a project I will have to pass on. There will be others in the future, after my surgeries and can resume a somewhat a functional life. Strats and Tele's I can do woth my eyes closed, but this...and the 335 are just out of my hands. Plus the cost of what it's gonna tske will help knock down some ever growing Dr. bills.

Thanks to everyone who helped with all of the advice on everything, I am sure I will come across another project like this that will not require so much details.

You guys ROCK!!!!
