I just wanted to get everyone's thoughts on refretting my original 1962 jazzmaster neck all of the frets are worn down low I have done alot of research and have been repairing guitars since the early 90s. I realise the frets were installed in a sideways manner The thing I don't see are luthiers installing the new frets in the same fashion.
Where's wayne charvel when you need him he worked on the original fender fretting machine I hear.

I may have to build a similar fret installing table illustrated in Dan erlewine's guitar repair book as I want the original look and feel of the original frets Though if I could find someone who does their refrets on old fenders this way I could pay them and take my mustang out to gigs until the Jazzmaster is ready.

I don't know if you will have any luck finding a side-ways fretter! As long as the tech that works on your guitar takes the frets out sideways, the board will not get chipped, and then it can be fretted the "normal" way, using a vintage style, narrow fret wire. Anyway, I bet that after a new fret job, the guitar will feel and play so much better, you will not care if the frets went in sideways or from the top! :D

The original frets stand a much better chance of being pulled (very carefully) in the "usual" way without damaging the fretboard, than trying to do it from one end.

I've done dozens of vintage Fender refrets using conventional removal and refretting methods, with no problems.

+1

And in the case of the mid/late '60s Jazzmasters, Jaguars, Jazz Basses, and a paltry few Stratocasters all with bound necks, the "sideways" method would be impossible without first removing the binding -- which brings its own can of problematic worms to the table.

First I would like to thank all who replied (this was my first forum post and am a big fan of the Fender forums) I must say I am lucky that the jazzmaster does'nt have bound finger board other wise I'd be looking at lifting the fret straight upwards.

I guess what I'm going for is the original fret feel with no glue added of any kind. I have tried other vintage fenders after a few fret jobs and the frets don't feel like they're built on as solid a foundation the slot seems to have lost some wood/density and the original tone changes (more noticable on brighter maple necks)
though it may have been the luthier that did the job also.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Though I agree no matter how the frets end up being installed It'll feel great and be much better for bending notes. I will use the same size wire I am thinking of doing the work myself with dunlop fret wire possibly as I am not taking on any client repairs at the moment.

I have a original '66 Jazzmaster, that I brought back in the early '80s in a pawnshop when I was on tour with Piney Brown. It was refinished by someone, and has a bound neck. I also would like to have it re-fretted.
