Yup, mine is wired wrong. Both pups are on when I'm toggled up to the neck. I have the wiring diagram now and I'll take it apart and fix it. New guitar QC?? Mmmmm

So you have the same tones with the pickup selector in neck and middle position?

Could you share the wiring diagram? I have been dying to mount a twin-volume knob and a twin-tone knob on that guitar. Having separate tone and volume for each pickup would be awesome.

I opened it up and found that the leaf contacts didn't fully separate in the neck/up position, leaving the bridge engaged. I small needle nose bend to the inner leaf on that side fixed it. In retrospect, that made much more sense than an actual wiring error. Life with leaf spring toggles...

While I had the strings off, I buffed the sharp fret ends with a dremel buffer/rouge, and that worked well.

Band practice Sunday -->> (might leave my prs at home.... )

I've been playing and gigging with the PS Mustang for a few months now and love it.

I tend to rotate and go through guitars pretty fequently, but I think I might have found something in this guitar that will allow me to keep it for years to come.

So with that said I have decided to go ahead and mod it to fit my needs (I usually won't mod something that I know I won't have for more than 1-2 years).

I should be picking it up from Brown's Guitar Factory tomorrow with the following mods completed:

-New custom built and cut solid rosewood pickguard (already seen pics of how this turned out and it is beautiful - the wood grain is incredible).

-I have had the pickup selector on the bottom horn moved to where the input jack is. So it will be volume, tone and then the pickup selector. And I have had this installed at an angle so that it is an easy and clean swipe as I drop my hand down towards it.

-Since the pickup selector is now where the input jack was I am having a Strat style input jack put in.

-All of the pots and capacitors have been upgraded.

-And last but not least they are installing some nice graphite saddles and setup for 10's.

Like I said, I should be able to pick her up tomorrow, and I am planning on gigging with it next Wednesday. Can't wait!!!

It's a great feeling guitar and neck. Lovin' how small and light it is, and also the shorter scale.

I just posted in another thread that I tried one in a store.

After I picked it up, I just stood there holding it for a few seconds before I even played it.

Nice neck.

It felt just like my Mustang--except this one had humbuckers & no vibrato--still if I was looking for a new solidbody--I would be very, very tempted....

For the money I was pretty happy with the new guitar, but it also was just in the range that I could see sinking a little more money into it and having exactly what I wanted. Therefore the mods. Just got her back today and couldn't be happier.

The only other thing I changed after getting her back today was the gauge of strings. It came from the factory with 9's. I put on 10's for the mod, and upped it to 11's (same as I use on my Tele), and it seems as if the 11's have helped me hit my sweet spot with this guitar.

And 11's on this feel and bend more like 10s on most guitars. Gotta love that shorter scale length.

Nice axe !

Did you think about having two tones and two volumes? That mod would make a lot of sense to me.

Yeah, I don't know why, but I've just never liked the 2 tone and 2 volume setup. It definitely can provide a lot of flexibility, but it's just "too many knobs" for me

had same problem with mine! on the upside, i believe that's the only reason it was in the 'used' section of musician's friend, and saved me $130 :P i wanna hug and then slap whoever sent it back if *that's* the reason why: i had it spotted and fixed in about an hour (that seems to be a common issue with those types of switches, so was my #1 spot to check). it surely didn't have any sort of cosmetic damage or 'solder required' wiring faults. oh well, thank you person for giving me a shiny mint condition Mustang Special for well below MSRP!

I was checking them out in the store and, they look great! I'm afraid to plug one in! I could see me bringing one home. I have a 78 that is nice and road worn. I got it new from the plant. I wish I would have picked up a Deluxe Reverb back then also.

Jon, I just bought a new MIJ Mustang Special in CAR. They blew it out because it has some electronic issues. Mine is doing the same thing yours was--the neck/up switch position also has the bridge combined like it would be in the neck/bridge middle position. Thanks for posting the issue with yours here. It helped me to confirm what this needs and so I got a good deal on it. I am ordering a new Switchcraft switch and will replace mine. I also have a crappy bridge ground to deal with too, so I will remove it and clean the chrome off with some 60 grit sandpaper and make sure it's contacting the ground wire. I may even add a copper tape strip with a wire soldered to it and add that to be safe. I can't wait to get into this guitar and get her spiffed up. This plays like a dream and is so pretty. Thanks for your post!!

I prefer two of each--but that's what I'm sued to--only my Mustang has just one for volume & one for tone--so it's the exception--but it doesn't mess me up.
