I have a MIJ Mustang and really need to find some new tuning machines for it as it is constantly going out of tune even without the tremolo. Does anyone know of any tuning machines that will fit on a mustang? I picked up a set of planet waves locking tuners and they were too large and it seems like a lot of tuners are too large for the mustang.

It might not be the tuners. It could be any number of reasons. You should have a guitar tech look at your guitar and see if there is any adjustments that can be made to help the guitar stay in tune. You could also have them install the locking tuners you mentioned. They would have to modify the guitar slightly, making the holes for the tuner bigger. I'm not sure how much that would cost but I imagine it can't be too terribly expensive. But modifiying your guitar like that would bring down the value if you ever want to sell the guitar.

I can help you! I had a Mustang reissue. It had the same problem. It wouldn't stay in tune even without using the tremolo. It's not the tuners, it's the bridge. Take it to a good guitar repair shop and have them put washers on the bridge posts underneath the bridge plate. This will "lock" the tremolo in place so this would only be a mod you would want if you didn't mind not using the trem bar. The good news is that it is completely reversable if you want to go back to stock. After I had this done, along with a good setup, the Mustang stayed in tune very well.
