Like a bad penny, it keeps turning up!

I took my Jazzmaster BT back after a couple of days because of the bad grounding and it was in too "rough" condition for a new instrument. WFH today waiting for "Brown" to bring the NIB Jazz-m Classic Player...and time now, guys!

The new Pawnshop one is fun! But I do like my new Jazzmaster. I like all the non-strat/teles. (not that there's anything wrong with strats and teles--but they are EVERYWHERE)

Even with no whammy bar! (but I love it!) I just locked down the trem. I have a Sierra Sunburst HSS Strat which I really like and enjoy, that I bought "used" that was indistinguishable from new (for a lot less than $500), but I prefer the CP. Its sound is more variable even with only two pickups and it's even nicer to play than the Strat. If people don't like MIM instruments, then, based on my 2 MIM, MIA ones had better be d@mn amazing!

(although the Blacktop Jazzmaster I returned was pretty rough, especially for a "new" guitar")

I like the idea of these guitars...but I'm not moved to actually get one. I wish they'd re-issue the old Santa Rosa model. Those were great.

If it doesn't sing to you when you play it, don't buy it. If it does, figure out of you can afford it, or if you'll have to skimp lunches for a year--or two--to get it.

There is no "right" guitar or "best" guitar. I wouldn't buy the '51 Pawnshop to win a bet, but if somebody else loves it and it sings to him/her, I won't criticize them for buying it. Why should I? What business of mine is it anyway? I've ridden motorcycles for 35 years and the third most frequent question I've been asked is: What's the best bike? My answer: The one that's under your b&tt that makes you smile when you ride it.

I'm a Fender traditionalist, but I found myself strangely attracted to these guitars, particularly the '72. I was in a music store today and tried one out just to pass some time. I thought if felt really good and overall had a quality feel to it. The body fit very comfortably against me. I thought the sound was pretty good, although I didn't totally warm up to the blend control in place of selector/tone control. I would have preferred a 7.25" radius neck, but otherwise the neck felt great. I would probably never buy one but if I owned one it I know I would enjoy playing it from time to time.

I bought a copper foil shielding kit from a dealer on eBay...then never got around to installing it - so since I saw your post maybe I'll finally give a go. My excuse is too many guitars to fool around with - I need to unload most of them. If you bought your Mustang at a shop, I'd take it back in, but if you did the deal online like me, you might be out of luck. I don't know how hard it is to file a warranty claim and get any results without going through a world of hurt in the effort. I haven't researched the topic lately, but I think it is problem other Panwshop Mustang owners have had. Kinda sucks you have to spend time and money to fix a manufacturing defect on a $800 axe.

My LPB Pawn Shop came in Monday via Musicians Friend. First thing you noice is the thing is light as a feather. With the same thin (and dimensionally smaller) body as the current reissue Mustang and no trem, it must be one of Fenders lightest ever. It's perfect for a "couch guitar", which is what I wanted. The fit and finish are pretty flawless...the fretwork is as good as the best Fender frets I've seen. The action is good right out of the box - thankfully, because the truss rod adjustment is unfortunately under the pickguard.

I didn't want a trem, so the fixed bridge is a big plus. The saddle height adjustment screws have sharp edges on top though, which are uncomfortable when you rest your hand on the bridge. As far as the pickups are concerned, the humbuckers sound fine to me, but sound thin in single coil mode - they could have left off the slide switches as far as I'm concerned.

The biggest problem I have with the guitar is something I've read about but have never had a problem with before - any contact I make with the pickguard below the pup area produces a crackling, hissing sound - which from what I gather is a static charge problem. When my fingers are slightly moist, there is no sound, but when they dry out, the crackling comes back. I haven't taken the pickguard off yet, but I'm wondering if there is a problem with the shilding under it (if there is any).

All that being said, I'm pleased with the guitar as it fills the requirements I had. To be honest though, I'm wondering why the series didn't come out as a Blacktop model with their pricing stucture. I have a Mexican Tele in LPB and it seems to be built just as well as this Japanese 'Stang. As when the Mustangs first came out, these little guitars are perfect for kids starting out, but the $800 price tag kills it for that purpose. I bought a Squier Duo-Sonic when they came out, and it's actually quite nice for a casual noodling axe, but the one bland color, poor bridge and no forearm contour limits its use for me and it's general appeal. This guitar for around $400, with a wide color choice would make a great quality first guitar.

hey dude I'm having the same problem with static and my pawn shop mustang (which I otherwise love and which gives amazing tones). did you ever figure out if this is a warranty type issue (lack of shielding or something)? the reason I ask is that strats of course have plastic pickguards and don't have this problem. i'm trying to figure out whether to make a warranty claim or just make sure I'm sweaty every time I play it. thanks.
THanks. If I can help you out any, actually I found out from Fender that the warranty thing is not that hard to do. You just take it to an authorized repair shop (in my case a local Sam Ash) with receipt and they will look at it and (presumably) fix or replace it. I was happy to learn that I didn’t have to ship it to Fender or even get any kind of preauthorization # for the shop to look at it. I’m not sure what I’ll do next, because it does not seem to be a “replace” type thing. Seems they all just have the problem. I got mine for only $670 brand new on musician’s friend, no tax, no shipping, and what I might do is try to just sell it. And get a tele to replace it. : ) I’m actually afraid the short scale and super lightness of it might give me bad habits. In other words, it’s TOO easy to play. Or I might keep it and give it to my daughter when she’s older.
Well, like I said, it's the perfect "couch" guitar for me...I'm too old to worry about bad habits. I've got medical problems with my hands and the short scale really helps me there. Anyway, I just cranked up the distortion a little and can't hear the scratching that much anymore - old ears, too. I'll probably try to fix it eventually, but not going to lose any sleep over it. Good luck with yours.
