The Tornado made its first debuts as a MIM Deluxe model in 1998. It sported a pair of Atomic humbuckers with two separate pickup volume and tone controls, as well as a rosewood fretboard with 22 frets and 24.75" scale length. Later, Fender issued an upscale USA-made American Special Tornado in Transparent Wine Red with Atomic II humbuckers and Butterscotch Blonde with Black Dove P90s as well as a Highway One version finished in Inca Silver with dual Enforcer humbucking pickups.

Yet another re-design of the Tornado was released featuring more modern colors like Navy Blue, Caramel Metallic, Blizzard Pearl and Chrome Red. No single coils would be offered in this model and the pickups were changed to "Duncan-designed" humbuckers, but still open-coil as opposed to the covered humbuckers featured on the first Deluxe release.

A shortlived racing stripe that went across the body from the bottom right and followed below the pickups towards the upper left horn, forming a sort of "L" shaped horizontal stripe was left out starting with 2005 models due to complaints from Fender owners and enthusiasts.

I have a red (tortoise & rosewood) MIM Fender Toronado that I love. It's been my #1 for the past 9.5 years, though admittedly I've had times where I didn't play it for a few months in between. I'm getting a telecaster next for something a bit different & hopefully some bought motivation ;) Nothing to do with the toronado though. It's good for a rock/blues sound. I didn't, don't and wont play anything outrageously heavy on it, so I can't comment on if it would be good for that. I'll take pictures of it & post them soon. :)

After running a few searches I found a Toronado in the UK that was on ebay a month ago. The auction has ended, but I can't tell if it's sold. It was listed at £490, if I were you I'd probably try to contact the seller. It was a 98 MIM Toronado Deluxe (just like mine but black, same pguard) Here's the link:

If you click on it fast enough you can go directly to the seller's page & see if he still has it. It looks like it's pretty rare there, so thought it might be worth a shot. I found it originally on this site, in case you can get info off that too: http://for-sale.yakaz.co.uk/fender-toronado-uk Good luck!

ETA: Sorry, just saw it sold. Nevermind :(

Sure, maybe he'll at least know where to get your hands on another one? Other than that all I can think of would be to order it & have it shipped internationally; however, I'm not sure of the customs taxes (if any) and rates for that.

Fender has no plans yet to issue a Blacktop Tornado with two Duncan humbuckers (AlNiCO Pro II in the bridge and SH-59N in the neck), a bound rosewood neck with pearloid blocks and skirted amp knobs.

The Blacktop series deserves a matching pair of Tornados and Cyclones for sure. :D

Found one, hopefully he still has it. I've emailed the seller to if he does. :D

That is a rare one.

It's the set neck, rather than the bolt on. There's another thread here about that version of the guitar. A kindly soul dropped in here from Fender to provide information about it..

Mine is from the Korean GT series - also with the Seymour Duncan pickups. Nice guitar if you can get used to the racing stripe..

The GT Toronado came in 3 different finishes, red, blue and green, with the latter having black racing stripes.

What colour is yours?

In the GT range, I also recall a bronze coloured one with the stripe.

Mine is metallic green with black stripe and matching green headstock face.

I live with the finish, because the guitar itself plays beautifully and sounds simply awesome with the Seymour Duncan pickups: SH14 Custom Custom in the bridge and SH1 (59) in the neck. Otherwise it's just a big old hunk of mahogany. I have enquired about a pro re-finish, but thats at least half as much as I paid for the guitar. I may compromise and put a black scratchplate on it - give it a more traditional Toronado look.

Sound wise, it has a very noticeable clarity and definition (those Seymour Duncans sound quite EMG like on the Toronado platform) but with the big push you expect from mahogany. It's not unlike a hot Gibson SG actually, but with some good old Fender bite. Seems to suit both low and high gain situations.

Some Toronado devotees sniff at the GT range - but to each their own, I guess. Maybe because of the Indonesian build. But at the full RRP, it was hardly a cheap Fender. I paid half the RRP - don't think they were big sellers and the shop wanted to get 'em out the door..

Here's mine:
