It's been made from both woods from what I've read. Did he prefer one wood to the other?

(I personally think basswood is fine and it relics or "bangs up" so easily but some people don't like it because they say it can have worse tonal quality than alder. And some say you likely can't tell the difference in tone between basswood and alder. :P)

On his drawings he didn't specify type, just "Very thin neck." An answer of no answer. Sorry! I'm one to not notice the difference much anyways.

I don't think he would ever care about the wood of his guitar...or the sound that it made... or his sound anyway....

I have never seen a Jag-Stang yet that has an alder body. I think all production models have basswood bodies. It was from Japan.......and they like to use mass quantities of basswood in the production of guitars, and several other cheap items :D

He barely played the Jag-Stang, maybe one gig? He died shortly after he got the seafoam one. He never saw the red one.

The real Kurt guitars are the Mustang and Jaguar that were the basis for the Jag-Stang. I think he used the Mustang more, don't hold me to that though.

I believe the seafoam green one BECAME red after a certain little incident.

As far as basswood goes. SUPERB! Check out the James Burton Upgrade Teles at two and a half grand. Made of Basswood and weigh in at about ten pounds and sound AMAZING. You can't knock the Basswood kiddies.

In the Bleach era. Sometime before the recording of Nevermind he bought a lefty Mustang at a pawnshop, heavily modified it, and they became his main guitars.

He smashed the guitars he didn't like, in the hopes that the tech or management would get him a decent lefty. But they'd just peice the sucker together with other parts and hadnit to him the next night. He wasn't smashing his guitars he liked. Many of them were too delicate to road trip after a while (like the high flyer) Like most of us, he really liked his guitars! I saw him smash a Squier strat that was giving him fits all night, wouldn't stay in tune.

sorry bro, thats not true at all.

about the jagstang, he used it live only in late 93. i understand he was unhappy with the body once he recieved the guitar from fender... he also had his tech replace the pickups. oh, and also, he changed the bridge to a tune-o -matic on his jagstang and jaguar. he was a fan of tune-o-matics. :D
weird dude huh?

om a big nirvana geek btw

All these questions and worries can be answered/solved by checking out www.kurtsequipment.com that has all the guitars he used from the very early days right until the end.

It also details all the guitars used on each tour and for each album.

Check it out, it's reliable info as it's from his guitar tech who did all the mods and placed the orders.

Can't say I'm overly concerned what it was made of..

It's either a waste of alder or a waste of basswood :?

Man the basswood is really nice. The alder is also nice! Both carry a different tonal sound and both have a different feel. They are, after all two different wood types! The basswood will really give you a deeper tone, with a fantastic mid sound, while the alder is brighter, and more or less, evened out in its sound. Either way, each has its own unique sound.

For some reason though, when I think "alder", I think "low budget birchwood"

But when I think Basswood, I feel, "Mahoganies younger brother" or "Gibsons cousin"
