Tools for specific jobs is my motto, and don't be afraid to experiment.

I needed to get some neck pickup B B King sounds going for some Gary Moore & BB King style duets with my guitar playing bud, and don't have a Gibson Semi. Tried all my twin humbucker guitars, but surprised myself with the eventual choice of my Toronado GT (with it's stock 'hotter than PAF Seymour Duncans) and a completely stock super lightweight, ultra modern Yamaha RGX A2 (weighs 4.5lbs). I thought I'd be using my Gretsch electromatic Pro Jet, but it was too twangy.

As for pickups generally, I'm a firm believer in vintage to slightly hot vintage output power levels. You can do more and cover a bigger range with them. I have a super hot Charvel 3 with SD and DiMarzios, but I just don't play the limited sort of stuff it excells at anymore.

But if flexibility with just one guitar is required, then I'll reach for one of my Strats. Probably the Highway with it's 3 Seymour Duncan alnico 2 Pros. You just can't beat a Strat in those catch all circumstances.

15 Electrics and 5 acoustics/classicals.

Sounds a lot, but we're not talking Alain la France here. They're all good budget to mid range guitars. Some were 2nd hand shop buys, I've bought back to scratch and usually improved in some way.

Here is a thought:

Johnny Marr, the most influential guitarist playing a Fender with a career starting in the 80s to present.

Lace Sensors were always my favorite pickups and as far as the grooviest of all Fenders and the widest range of sounds around....the Performer.

This picker holds, 85 to 90 pecent of the sound is in the player. Guitar and amp and pedals and strings and picks and cords etc make up the balance.

That said, in no particular order: '62 Reissue Jazzmaster and Jaguar, Am Std Strat, Am Std Tele, Fender VI.
