Hey guys,
I know this is sort of impossible to answer because not a lot of people have played every fender guitar model that's been made, except the people who work at fender.

But besides the strat and the telecaster, what is the best Fender guitar sound quality wise ?
If you're asking well for what style, then everything under the sun besides metal.

Thanks.

::EDIT::
Revising my question so I don't have to create a new thread,
What is the best pickup(s) in a Fender guitar?

I'm doubtful that a reasoned-and-logical response to something like that is even quantifiable. I've heard every guitar generalization under the sun, including those that included non-Fender instruments. None of them held any import IMO since I've heard outstanding blues played on a Mustang, very convincing jazz played on a Strat, twangy-with-a-capital-T country played on a Jaguar, etc etc. I think a gifted player's hands have more to do with determining a tone suited for a particular genre than the actual guitar itself or the model name it was given.

Yeah...the more I see guitar playing the more I'm convinced that the tone is in the fingers more than in the hunk of wood and box of electronics.

Marketing makes us think otherwise.

SWhen you buy any Fender guitar you can rest assured that you have a great product. As Arjay said just about any guitar can be used for any genre of music as the tone is in the hands of the player.Jazz great Ed Bickert of Toronto plays some of the best and mellowist jazz licks on a Tele and he has for decades and Arian Belew of King Crimson has played some of the most sophisticated prog rock with an old Mustang. So it doesn't matter what you play,it's how you play it.

There's a guitar tech on youtube comparing all his "metal guitars", giving you the skinny on which one sounded the best. He mentioned that:

5 factors that define a guitar’s sound:
wood
amp
pickups
strings
the bridge’s metal type

Obviously a cheap squier isn't gonna sound as good as its non-squier counterpart.

I think a good stratocaster with HSS pickup configuration and a coil-tap switch would be the most versatile guitar you could own. That way you can get twangy, and have the bell like single-coil sounds, and the humbucker would let you really rock off some socks! But as for "other" Fender's that sound good.....I like the older Musicmaster's. Like a Mustang without the funky bridge/tremolo and a single neck pickup!

I'm a middle-aged newbie, but I was stunned by the Blacktop Jazzmaster (same body shape as the Jag, but longer neck like a strat). I loved the action and found that even with just the two pickups I could get a wide variety of sound, more than my Strat HSS.

I know there is no "best" instrument--the player has to fit it, not matter whether it's 9' concert grand for Chopin, the right trombone for jazz, or a 5-string banjo for back-porch bluegrass.

There's usually a compromise between ideal, what you can get, and what you can afford. But I really liked the BT JM and the price is startlingly low.

That's neat, what kind of sounds are you talking about ?
I wonder how much better the quality is between the blacktop jazzmaster and the classic player jazzmaster special.

The special costs $350 more.

If one would consider the Fender Jazzmaster and Musicmaster to have Fender's sound, then one could say they have a Fender sound. If one plays through a traditional sounding vintage Fender amp, then it will have a Fender sound.

Just my guess.

The Classic Player HH Jag is the same price ($350 more) and gets some really killer sounds. But it is the shorter scale. I was surprised that they didn't make a Classic Player Jazzmaster Special HH.

Even if I had played every one of the several hundred Fender models over the years, I still couldn't answer this question.

Maybe you're asking about versatility of tone. The numbers don't lie--it would be a Strat with a 5-po switch.

Otherwise, your question is the equivalent of, "How long is a piece of string?"

Fender Lead series Guitars! Lead I or Lead II or Lead III! They all rock! And some of the last models to be made at the Fullerton plant!
