Geez, if you have a $5000 budget, the world is your oyster! If you are planning on sticking with the bass, just go ahead and buy a USA Fender Jazz Bass! Even the Squier versions are decent basses......but for that kind of cash, you can buy a REAL vintage bass, if you are in to that sort of thing. Anything made by Fender will be a quality product, so will Ibanez, Music Man. Made in USA is nice, but not necessary! The USA Fender Standard basses can be had around $1200 - $1300. The Squiers you can get in a starter pack with amplifier for $299 or so, and $179 - $200 for the bass alone. The Mexican made Fender standard basses will be $550 give or take. :)

For $5000 you could buy a Fender Precision,Fender Jazz Bass,Fender Jaguar Bass and a Fender Mustang Bass, that way you'll have all your basses covered.Hee Hee Hee.

+1!

Hell......for five large you could get yourself a MIA Jazz Bass plus a pair of vintage Acoustic 360's and lead your star-struck fans on a pilgrimmage to Alpha Centauri!

(and we'll all be able to hear you from there)

nice :) just let us know what you got... believe me i tried out a squier affinity p bass and it was wicked so i guess you just can't go wrong with a fender... and if you want to leave the whole fender bass line you could always go for a musicman stingray (it was designed by leo fender and it's pretty famous)... but in the end it's all up to you... good luck :)
