You're having no luck because there is no such thing as a "JP-80". There is however, an American Fender bass called JP-90 that was manufactured from 1990-1993. Google to the rescue: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=fe ... 3&aql=&oq=

I've owned two of these basses. Their necks are very slim and prone to warping. What else do you want to know about them?

Eh, I know all about the JP-90 bass. I presume the JP-80 and M1969 are experimental instruments that never saw the public eye. I was trying to find info or pics on them. But the only thing I can turn up is that they are apparently in the Rock Band video game and there was a Guitar Player issue on japanese Fenders in the 80s with pictures.

You're most likely talking about the Fender Performer, a pretty cool and super-rare guitar. It was only made for a year (split between '85-'86) and was made in Japan. I dunno where the JP80 nickname came from since as far as I know, that mark isn't anywhere on the axe. But it's a fine axe, it has 24 easy-access jumbo frets, a switch that switches the two humbuckers into a single-coil mode, a cool triangular headstock, a sweet body, and more.

They're really good guitars in general, and I dunno how many were actually produced. There's a guy in New York who's selling one on ebay right now for like $900. Dunno about the whole JP80 thing, but I did see it labeled as a "Fender JP80" in Rock Band 3. It's a real axe obviously, but there are also some basses that were created in Japan as well which share the body style, but I think they use single-coil pickups. The neck is also very slim.

Both the Performer and Katana employed a headstock design borrowed from the ill-fated Swinger/MusicLander made during the CBS era. The Performers were available in guitar and bass versions.

There was also a Squier Katana which featured a single humbucker, a bolt-on short scale neck and basic volume/tone controls. The Squier version is much more commonly available in the used market than the genuine Fender model.
