Hello,

I am a 40 year old with a 12 year old son. He wants to learn how to play electric guitar. I bought the strat 200 dollar kit that came with amp and everything. Well I was trying to tune it and broke the smallest highest string. I have read how to replace them but I don't know what string to replace it with. Any one have any ideas? Any help would be appreciated. Gauge? Also if any one has tips, tricks or web sites they think would help I would love to hear from you. We both like rock and blues. We are scheduled to take lessons, I thought it would be a bonding time before he gets to old and thinks spending time with his dad is stupid. Thanks for your help and patience.

Replace the strings with a set of 9's ( the highest string you broke was a .09 gauge). Any brand will do, but I like Fender Super 250's. Just buy a new set and change them all. It is simple to do, just take all the strings off, start with the highest number ( which will be the thickest) and start from the top down. An easy way to affix the string to the tuning post is once the string is loaded in the bridge, pull it tight up to the tuning post and wrap it around the post COUNTER clockwise about 2-3 turns before putting the string THROUGH the hole in the tuning post. Then pull the free end of the string tight as you tune the peg up to pitch. Repeat for all the rest of the strings :D And clip off the excess string....it bugs the CRAP out of me to see "guitar hippies" who leave the excess string to flop around.

Welcome to the forum Dengar,I won't go into guitar stringing because other posters have given you enough info.I will pat you on the back however for undertaking something that you and your son have a common interest in.All too often these days kids are let loose to raise themselves,it's great to see a parent who takes an avid interest in his child and what he does.Good for you.
