Hi, I have a Gibson SG. the problems are as follows: Intonation is a $@!&*, frett buzz takes an engineer to get out, G string constantly goes out of tune (as the rest follow suit) and the frets are too small. Will a stratocaster or telecaster solve all my problems or are these all universal problems that I'm having?

The SG has a long neck that is completely free of the body, and left unsupported. This can make the neck tempermental and prone to requiring more frequent adjustments. This alone could be the whole issue, and the cause for all of your woes. Overall, your troubles with the SG will pretty much be universal to all guitars if they are not maintained and adjusted from time to time. A "Fender" may not be a true "fix" for your issues. A Gibson is a nice, quality instrument, and just like a Fender, will need to be maintained to play it's best. Your tuning problem could be that either the nut is not slotted properly for your gauge of strings and is binding up, or you are not installing your strings properly to the tuning posts. Intonation can go to crap if you have too much relief in the neck, which would also cause you to lower your string height at the bridge for decent string height, and you would have buzzing on some of the frets. On a Gibson, I use a setup with a straighter neck and slightly higher string height ( around 3/32 ) at the 12th fret. As for your "small" frets, I am confused because most all modern Gibson's come with a medium-jumbo type fret wire. Do you mean to say your frets are too low? This would make for flatter crowns ( more prone to buzz) and horrible intonation, not to mention making string bends hard and uncomfortable to do. A good recrown or a refret would solve this. Your guitar can be fixed, and any guitar can have your same problems. I hope you get it fixed, and then later buy a Fender to have as well, cause having both makes for a complete tonal palate! :D

Thanks for the quick reply. By small frets I meant the spacing between them... oppsie poopsie. The fret height now that you mention it is extremely high, and I'm so strong that I often times hold the note out of tune. How would I go about setting up the nut correctly for my gauge strings? I have an extra one if I need to do something really different. I'm using nines right now but I've had alot of people tell me to go to tens or elevens.

Take your SG to a pro to get adjusted and set up. Those problems you are having can occur with any guitar regardless of brand. Guitars are made of wood, and every piece of wood is different...therefore every guitar is different.

Oh and about the "small frets" being described by you as the distance between frets...that is called scale length. Most Fenders have a 25.5" scale length (measured from nut to bridge saddle) while Gibsons have a 24.75" scale length.

With the exception of the Jaguar and the Mustang (Which are the 24.75 scale) Fenders are mostly the 25.5 scale length, so that can help if you feel the spacing it to short.
Really, I have played both and I never really felt the fret distance was too short of either.
But I am not you, and you are not me, we are all different so the longer scale maybe just what you need.
For the most part, I like playing the longer scale, and all my current guitars are 25.5.

Jaguars and Mustangs are 24 inch scale, not 24.75. The Gibson is 24.75.

Well Gibson calls their scale "24.75" but if you really put a tape measure to a Gibson it's going to come back closer to 24.625" so the scale length difference is pretty significant.

Most guitar makers follow Gibson with this - most Gretsch's are 24.625", and were most of the old Guild electrics. Now Rickenbacker does use a true 24.75" scale on their guitars.

I went ahead and got a standard. They tried to tell me it's a modern c neck but when I compared it to other standard strats it was way different. It's still a c but the Modern c neck they showed me was more flat than the one I have. and the necks on other standards were a lot less glossy (finishy) and pale. some one told me that it's a modified c neck, is there anyway to tell or a site that has pictures?

Hey Brad - how about posting a photo of your new guitar (don't know if you got a Strat or a Tele). You could also pull a picture of the guitar you got from the Fender website, but it's best to show us your exact guitar to answer your question.
