I am considering a classic player Jazzmaster, but my one issue is hum. I play alot of jazz and would prefer there be no hum. So my question is how effictive is shielding the body cavity with copper at eliminating hum? I've seen, though I don't remember where, some images of people shielding the inside of the pickup covers too with copper foil. Thanks a bunch for any advice!!

Shielding will go a long way to stop hum, along with proper grounding of the electronics and especially the wall outlet. Other factors will be how close you sit to the amplifier, if you are near any pc monitors or florescent lights. A GOOD cable helps too. :) Single coils will make some noise.....but I think you would be fine with proper shielding.

+1
The center position of the three way select switch puts the pups out of phase and pretty much cancels hum. The rythm circuit controls the neck pup and is pretty quiet,
just roll off the tone a bit.
Enjoy your new Jazzmaster,

Thanks alot for the advise! Guess I'll do that then. I have a strat with lace sensors on it, sometimes it's so quite I forget the amp is on if I go do something. I love the sound of single coils and the jazzmaster seems to have alot of depth and clarity, very appealing!

Yes. The Allparts bodies are licensed Fender replacement parts. They are the same. All the Fender parts will fit it and everything will line up correctly. I've bought several bodies from Allparts and they're good quality pieces.

There are alot of great ideas here as to getting rid of the hum.

I just recently sheilded the inside cavity of my old original 62 jazzmaster with aluminum tape checking the continuity with an ohm meter as I went so that all the cavities were working as one. That seemed to help quite a bit. Then I discovered the original brass shielding is now available from fender!
I did hear that with the brass shielding the feedback it not as nice? But this is not something that will concern many Jazz style players too much?

If you want a great clean sound try an old mxr dyna comp. And a great amp for the Jazzmaster is an old tweed champ (i have a 59)

Its the only amp that has ever given me goosebumps and I,ve repaired and played alot of really nice fenders (though they were all beautiful) :D

An Electro Hamonix Hum De-Bugger will do MUCH to tame hum from a Jazzmaster's big single cols. Highly recommended.

Good to hear someone else playing Jazz on a Jazzmaster!
