Mustangs have their place tone-wise. But many sound really thin and bright. Some just sound tinny and dead......very un-inspiring. When shopping for a 'Stang, be sure to play the actual guitar you wanna buy. They do good for grunge rock though. The mustang bridge / tremolo design is not the best, and really kills the sustain. Again though, they are unique, and you may really like them a lot!

I have a '65 Mustang and I've gigged with it many times. The pickups are thinner sounding than Strat pickups but with proper adjustment of the amp's eq you can get some great sounds from one.I've played everything from rock to country to blues on my little darling and I love the sound of it especially through a Marshall or a vintage Bassman amp.

Agreed, I love the sound of the Mustang--it was the main reason I bought one.

it is however a very particular sound, not every player will like it..... if you know what your doing though, adjust everything on the amp and tone on guitar etc, it can play anything from blues (particularly nice and IMO underrated tone for blues, by the way) to grunge and even into metal territory

Best thing I liked about my Mustang, the out of phase switches.

Definitely--it won't work for everybody--but the same is true for a Strat, a Tele, a Les Paul, etc.

I love playing blues on mine--I discovered early you can get a great blues tone on one, and it works for heavier sounds as well.

I like those too, and most of the time I have both pickups on--and most of that time I have them out of phase.

Depends on your tone settings. The Mustang will hit pretty much any tone. Highly tweakable.
