I,ve been playing for over 40 years and actually own my roadworn Jag.But i respectfully disagree with some comments on the roadworn issue, i got a roadworn P. last october and the neck on that is heaven, its got the finish worn off,the whole thing fits like an old pair of Levy,s plus its factory done with common tools like sanders and files.Do i expect to pay more sure i do there,s nothing free in this world. There are actually more people ^POSING^ with shiny new guitars who dont play them either, just my 2 cents

I don't have a big problem with someone buffing down a neck to give it a more "played in" comfortable feel but having the body defaced to give the illusion of years of use or misuse serves no purpose other than to vandalize what could be a beautiful instrument. Imagine the mess the vintage market would be in now if relicing had been popular in the days of Amati,Guarneri,Stradivarious and even in the early days of Martin and Gibson there would hardly anything vintage left as a large number of them would have been pre-destroyed.
Ripitup555 made some valid but very scarey unnerving points as I could see some moron doing this sort of thing and as a matter of fact I have seen it
Years ago a guy I know bought a near mint '62 Strat and rather than buy a new case for it he actually chopped off a large part of the top horn so that it would fit into the beat up old case he had for a cheap old Les Paul copy he had.Needless to say when word got around what he had did his name was Mudd as he didn't even keep the piece he'd cut off.

No problem here for me. I don't own a RW Strat yet, but will do one day soon.

The important criteria is that they are well built, fine guitars that play really well and sound superb.

The relicing is done reasonably well - but i wouldnt play one for pose value. It would just be a little nod from me to the brilliant strat players I have seen and heard over the years and to the fabulous instruments they've played. Maybe a little debt paid to Fender history..

And if folks don't want one or detest the idea of fake wear, then they don't buy one. Ownership is not obligatory!

Hi JSJH I mentioned "poseurism" in this thread a few posts before this one,and Roadworns and Reliced guitars are for poseurs who want to look like the wear on their guitars is from years of dedicated playing. All this is a crock because anyone that values his instrument doesn't let it get beat up to the extent that these poseur guitars do anyway.

i agree with this. again, i dont mind the look of road worn, but why not buy a guitar and let it wear out over the years of playing it?

A guitar bought and worn in by someone based on their playing style and habits should feel and play better than anything artificially worn. That's what I would rather have.

It may not be a crime. But, it is like making mods to a custom shop strat without any tonal changes.

I can understand why some folks might say, "just play your own wear into the guitar.."

But the truth of the matter is that a modern poly finished Strat - that is respected and treated fairly by it's owner - will look pretty much like it did when it was new, even after 10+ years.

Modern finishes are now all but bomb proof. They will never wear in the way that those old finishes have over the years. And if you must have 'that' look.. well it's not going to happen is it? Artificial relicing is the only way to go, unless you want an elderly instrument that is probably structurally on it's last legs and at a hugely inflated price not justified by the guitar's condition.

As I said before, if you don't want a guitar with fake wear, then don't buy one. But recognise that for some people who do, the Road Worn series is the only (affordable) game in town..

I have to agree, they may look all cool and vingage but as mentiond earlier, you wouldn't buy anyother item in this state, such as a car or tv. And definitely wouldn't pay extra. I much rather have a guitar with no marks on it or only genuine gigged marks from myself.

I'm sure it's a fad and in 10 years we'll be laughing about this. But if people are buying them then Fender are gonna meke em.

my uncle thinks road worn series are for total possers....instead of buying one, he took off the body of his start, took out the pickups and skipped it down the driveway a couple of times  it actually looks really really cool now

I don't see how he could equate road worn with poseurs then go and beat up a perfectly good guitar to basically achieve the same effect. If anyone artificially adds wear and tear on a guitar they are basically doing the same thing that the factory is doing.

I think that Fender could spend their time designing a new guitar, or reissuing classic Fenders that could have a new market (Coronado, Starcaster, XII (an American made please). One of the best things about Fenders is getting a standard strat/tele/jag/jazzmaster, and modifying it to be yours, just like the American muscle car tradition. But instead Fender "modifies" the guitars for you with things nobody wants, and then they take guitars and beat them to hell to add a higher price.

I love Fender, I just don't know what the hell the R&D department does anymore.

Actually, I note in this month's edition of Guitarist magazine, a new range of Classic Player Road Worns - again from Mexico - that updates the existing models for an 'updated' price £250+ Announced at NAMM. The HSS model has a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates 'bucker as standard..

Clearly Fender must believe there's a market for them. I assume the standard RWs will continue to remain available..
