I've recently acquired a new Jag Blacktop with an Adjusto-matic bridge and I cannot for the life of me work out how to lower the string height! It looks as though the serrated wheels under the bridge bar at each side should be turned so they go down towards the body, but this would mean that they have to go down into the bridge recess and they won't. Can someone please help me out here.

That's right... if the bridge needs to go down as far as the body then it sounds like the neck is not set right. A good low action should be obtainable by having it above the scratch-plate.

Thanks TZ :D . Can you advise me what you think is a good 'neutral' gap for me to set between the scratch-plate and the bottom of the adjuster.

It all depends on what action you want and what the guitar can take and how the neck is set. A low action with no buzz on that Jaguar would be about 2.0mm (measurement taken from the bottom of the metal wheel to the scratch-plate) or less!!!
