I've been seeing the bridge covers for the Fender Jazzmaster advertised. Is this helpful to tone or sustain, or keeping strings in place, or a purely cosmetic item?

Strictly cosmetic.

With the bridge cover in place, it makes palm-muting difficult.

Same as with a Strat or Tele ashtray.

Fair enough, Arjay. I don't have a problem with string slippage, and I don't want to do anything that would mess with my Jazzmaster, almost as beat-up as Rory Gallagher's Strat, and with just about as much mojo. Thanx!

They're really more of a "case candy" item to add some vibe. All my Strats have them -- but they stay in the case whenever I'm actually playing the guitar.

I had converted my new 'Blacktop' Telecaster, with its humbucker pickups, to Baritone (using the heaviest 6 strings of a D'Addario set of Jazz Sevens -- going a full string lower.

Anyway, I wanted to do the same to my Jazzmaster, but I thought it would be a much more complicated job because I would have to reslot the Bridge. But when I unstrung the Jazzmaster and lifted off the Bridge and took a close look at it, well, the Bridge is not really slotted at all -- there are just little shallow "Vees" which position the strings. It is no wonder that it is so easy to knock the strings off a Jazzmaster Bridge!

So I went ahead with the Baritone Operation. I got a very thin Hacksaw Blade, that is, a blade made for cutting metal, and gently sawed square slots in place of the Vees. The thick slots for the fatter strings take a bit more work. I folded sandpaper of various light grades around a thin finger nail file (that I had used up in widening the Nut Grooves) and widened the larger slots in this way. Also, to make sure the grooves were smooth enough to not damage the strings I used folded sandpaper of light grade to smooth and polish the notches.

The Baritone Jazzmaster sounds great, but in regards to just the Bridge -- Now the strings don't jump off the Bridge no matter how rough I play.
