Long story short: Went into Chuck's Music in Lexington, found a '77 Musicmaster (black on black with a rosewood board), walked out with it for a few hundred bucks.

What else could I add? Well, I had the chance to buy it from a co-worker for a couple hundred bucks, but it was going to need a new nut and the volume pot resoldered. I was going to pull the trigger on it with my next paycheck, but another co-worker managed to beat me to the punch and snapped it up. There are a few blanks to fill in afterward, but I do know the nut was replaced and the soldering work finished and (here's where a lot of guess work is coming in) the guitar was traded, along with a few other things, to a nice '65 Melody Maker (with tremolo) that Chuck's was asking $800 for.

The Musicmaster is original, save for the aforementioned nut, and like any other MM from the late '70s, it suffers from the negative paint reaction where the finish winds up being very thin and fragile, discolored, and easily checks and chips. It isn't exactly pretty, but it really sings and plays excellently. It's also surprisingly loud unplugged.

Pics coming soon.

Congrats! I have a 1978 Musicmaster, modded like a Duo-Sonic with a stacked single coil in the bridge and a 3 way toggle switch. These guitars rock!

Musicmasters are cool little guitars and sound great for leads through a nicely overdriven amp like a Blues Jr.-nice and full sound without sounding shrill.
