I am a new guitarist and a big fan of Bruce. Am trying to decide between 3 Fenders:
A. Fender Custom Shop Limited 1950s Esquire Electric Guitar
B. Fender American Vintage Series '52 Telecaster Electric Guitar
C. Fender Vintage Hot Rod 52 Telecaster

I would never say money is no object but I can afford the Custom Esquire. Plus, "Poor boy want to be rich, rich man want to be king. And the king ain't satisfied til he rules everything"

Help me decide since I am a newbie!

I think that the American Vintege '52 would give you the most authentic "Boss" tone.

guys, he did say NEW guitarist, so perhaps these expensive beauties arent best suited for him.... of course they would sound best, but Christ knows if hell actually stick with it (NOT AN INSULT), so advising him to drop a ton of money probably isnt great advice....

Well you must know that Bruce uses many Teles in many various setups of pups so no one guitar is going to reproduce all of his sounds.

I'd get a nice butterscoth blonde '52 and be happy. No need for the CS unless you're going to have them reproduce the leather tooled and painted "street light" scene he has on the Esquire.

I think someone on this forum did have that done..not thru the CS though. Came out beautifully too.

Thanks everyone!

I realize I would not be able to reproduce his exact guitar. The only thing that would make me go for the CS would be the limited edition resale value. Otherwise it sounds like either the Hot Rod or American Vintage would be good.

Since you're a new guitarist I'm going to give you a piece of advice that I've learned somewhat the hard way over 30 years - don't buy a guitar just because of resale value. Even a Fender CS Limited Edition is going to take a huge resale hit the minute you walk out the door; I've played that "Limited Edition" game with other makes of guitars and been burned on them. Even the two CS Strats I've owned on the way took huge hits on resale (fortunately for me I got one of them used but the original owner took a good hit). Always buy the guitar that speaks to you the most; if it is the CS then so be it.

Now back to the original question - I would go for the AV '52 myself but I found the neck on the Hot Rod '52 to be just too large for me. However, play the AV '52 and the Hot Rod '52 back-to-back and go with the one with the neck you like the best. Also don't discount the MIM Classic '50s Tele - they are really very nice and fairly close to the USA models.

Floyd - it's not so much that it's a bad idea, but the OP should know that any new guitar he buys, regardless of price level, is going to depreciate the second he steps out of the store. Companies these days, Fender included, have so many "limited editions", "special runs", etc. that those lose value just as much as any regular production guitar, and may lose more since they may cost more to begin with but resell for close to the same price as a "garden variety" CS Nocaster. Of course, that is also why I suggested an MIM Classic 50s as an alternative.
