Hello,

I recently picked up a Blacktop Jazzmaster from Musicians Friend for cheap because the tone knob wasn't working. I thought maybe the pot was just bad at first and replaced it, but then I noticed that there is no capacitor wired in on the tone knob. Does anyone know if there is supposed to be? Looking around at other schematics of other Fender guitars, it's always there.

I can't find any wiring/repair schematics for these or any good shots of other people's wiring yet.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Justin

Ok, in case anyone is wondering, I got this sorted out.

There was no capacitor from the factory wired to the tone knob so I got one and wired it up and it worked.

Also, some other odd things I noticed and found someone else had mentioned too, is that they did not wire the ground to the 3-way switches' ground, but rather just to the single-coil connection on the 3-way switch. I was getting a buzz if I touched the metal part of the 3-way switch. I re-wired it so the ground goes to the switches ground and that buzz is gone. They also had a short wire going from the single coil connection on the 3-way out about an inch then connected to a ground wire and the wire going to the volume knob. I re-wired that as well.

Sounds and works great now. The tone knob isn't quite a uniform control. It seems more like a 3-stage, but it could be the cap I picked, but I've read some other people saying the same thing as well. It's fine by me.

Interesting. I just got a brand new sealed in the box from the factory Blacktop Jazzmaster today. The Tone knob on mine is not working properly. It does NOTHING all the way down to 1 then just clicks to total muffled sound. There is no physical click, but it jumps at a specific point in the turn every time... right between 1 & 2.

I like everything else so far... neck is not perfect, but it very playable.

What CAP did you choose?

i have the same problem with my new blacktop jaguar. the problem is not the cap.
the problem is the wrong type of controller ( it must be a logarithm. type but in the
blacktop a linear types ).

You are right about the pot. I was told it was a warranty issue and I could have taken it to a local Fender authorized repair place. That would mean leaving it for anywhere from 2-4 weeks. The closest authorized place is always swamped. I could have returned the guitar from where I bought it and then waited to get a new one when they come back into stock in a month or so.

I decided to take it to my local tech and he popped a new 250K pot in and there was NO cap either. He put one on and it smoothed out the sound. The original Tone pot was a 500K and I noticed no lack of brightness from the 250K.

Also, the 1/4" jack is cheap as hell and is going to break quickly, while you are replacing the tone pot you might as well replace the 1/4" jack with a decent Switchcraft.
