Hello, I was wondering if anybody could help me decide if I should get a Jaguar or a Mustang. I am more of a rhythm player than a lead one. I spend the same amount of time playing with distortion as I do without it. I mostly play stuff by The Beatles, Nirvana, Weezer, Green Day ... stuff like that. Thanks to everyone and Happy Holidays.

I agree that the choice is your personal preference.

I don't have a Mustang, but do have a Jaguar.
The Jaguar has become my favorite guitar. But that's just my preference. :D

I wish Fender would re-release the Cyclone 2, with the Jaguar pickups.
That was an awsome guitar! (in my humble opinion)

In this opinion, the Jaguar is light years "better" than the Mustang. Especially if you play half the time undistorted, the Jaguar's quality can then shine.

'Had an MIM Jaguar a couple years ago; it was such a nice guitar, it was replaced by a '62 Reissue MIM Jaguar, which is a truly outstanding instrument. And looks really s*xy in Shell Pink.

Best of fortune!

I have both an original '65 Jaguar and '65 Mustang and both are great guitars. The Jaguar's single coils are much fuller sounding than the Mustang's and you can get a better tonal range and more sustain.Though it's true that you can get that "out of phase" sound from the Mustang the adaptability of the 2 sets of controls make the Jag more versatile and probably the better choice of the two.BTW the reissue Jaguars have single coil pickups and as far as I know only the HH models have humbuckers but the Blacktop Jaguar may have them too but I'm not familiar with them.In my opinion it isn't a true Jaguar if it has humbuckers as they were designed and used for decades with single coils.

Like others, I can offer but a humble anecdote to add to the discussion.

I have a Jazzmaster and a Mustang, among other guitars. I don't have a Jaguar, but here's my story anyway.

I hadn't planned to buy the Mustang, but it kind of fell into my lap, and I couldn't pass up the deal ($350). Now that I'm an owner, I'm thinking about putting this bad boy on eBay. The same goes for the Jazzmaster. It's not that I don't like them, it's that I consider them both nonessential. They are mere distractions to me.

'94 MIJ Mustang in sonic blue,
'03(? got it written down somewhere) CIJ Jazzmaster in sunburst

Either will do in an over all sense.
They each do some things differently--so try them both--if you still can't make up your mind, flip a coin.

(I say this as a Mustang owner--who loves it.)

Sure...
If you want to sound like a lot of other people...

okay--seriously--look for what guitar speaks to you, what guitar that is will vary from person to person--and sometimes many speak to you.

I would say for the type of music you play the new Black top Jag would be a very good choice.

But with all guitars, it's all about how it fits you.

I try to equivocate buying a guitar like buying a pair of shoes, it has to fit right or you won't use them.
I have owned a mustang and a Jazzmaster (The jazz is a 25.5 scale, but the same body style as the Jaguar). I like how the Jazz/Jag offset body hangs and feels, some do not like it at all.

It would be best to try then both, and a big apple strat while your at it and see with ones feels best.

i would get a mustang because the controls are easy. the only problem with them is that some are 22.5 scale and others are 24

I have never been a huge fan of the Mustang's; not due to the sound, I just hate the look. They look like toy guitars IMO. And Jaguars are something I've always liked but a couple too many knobs and switches for my liking. I think; like pretty much everyone else said, the best bet would be to hit your local music shop and play them both and see which one suits you. You never know, you may end up finding something completely different than either of those guitars that suits you better. I agree with JeffyTune's comparison of guitar shopping and shoe shopping, either way if you're not comfortable with what you buy it'll never get used. I've got guitars that I bought simply for the fact that I liked this or that about them, but some of them never get used. Good Luck, and no matter what you choose, as long as it's what you wanted and are comfortable playing, you'll be happy with the choice.

Yep ... I agree with the quote above.
And try before you buy ... if at all possible. If you can't ... be sure the store has a liberal "return policy". Or ... maybe the store would allow you to try each out at your home, with the amp you would be using.

Oh ... and TimDrakeMusic,
(off topic - but ---)
I REALLY like your avatar. Our flag behind a B&W of you. How did you do that? And how do you put an avatar on - at this site?
Thanks for any info :)
