I've been in the hunt for an electric. It's been years since I've owned one and it's been fun searching.

I had played a bunch of guitars and decided on a tele. BUT, I know I've always seemed to like a smaller scale when I played it. I did have a smaller scaled music man or something like that a long time ago and liked it. However, it was thin sounding and I put a humbucker in there in order to make it sound more agreeable to me.

So, if you only had one electric, would you go for a Mustang? I play clean mostly, strumming. May occaisionally play a little distorted. I'm not really much of a lead player, although my goal is to constantly improve in every area.

You think I can get good clean, strummy tones that don't pierce your ears out of one?

If I could have only one guitar, it'd be a Strat but I've had Mustangs and I love the ease of play and the out of phase idea, although the pickups are not as strong.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Less sustain too I would imagine.

I'm not sure if I need real strong pups. But I don't like my guitars too trebly or thin.

Although it was good enough for Johnny Winter, I dont see too many on stage anymore.

ABPOS,

I know you are in the hunt for a Tele pretty bad, but you may want to think serious about the Mustang.

My Teles are my #1's, but no matter what Tele I have out, my Mustang is ALWAYS right next to it on it's stand. It's the one guitar in my collection tht gets played everyday.

I like the shorter scale for learning something new, where the fingering is just a bit easier for my arthritic fingers. Once I master it on my Mustang I transfer it over to whatever Tele I have out that day.

I like the Mustang for it's ease of play, plus I think it's just a darn good looking and unique guitar. I also like to occasionally play it out of phase, it just gives it a unique sound. The quality of the guitar is outstanding - I think you'd be very happy owning one.

Get the Mustang now, then you'll still be GASing for a Tele and you'll end up with both!

That's funny that you say this. I went back and played it today and it just didn't do it for me. It doesn't sound as good plugged in and unplugged. Now mind you, I'm not saying it's a junky guitar. And it may be that I'd like another one. But this one didn't do it for me. I will say that it IS easy to play things on it. But at times it almost feels too small. I'm not real big, but my fingers aren't that short for someone who's 5'8". So, it's not a necessity to have the smaller scale. And anyways, I think a tele is more bread and butter and a mustang is like a good secondary one. Instead of the other way around. At least that's my thoughts on it at this point. I do like them though.
