I just thought I'd share my 70's competition Mustangs with you all. Before someone gets smart about it, I know the bass has been strung goofy in these pics. The reason why is that the previous owner bought the wrong scale length strings. I took these just after getting the bass home and I hadn't restrung it properly yet. It now has GHS flatwounds on it and it plays great. Here are the guitars. Enjoy!

The guitar is a 1972 competition red Mustang and the bass is a 1973 competition blue Mustang Bass. Both are exceptional instruments and get tons of use on stage and in the studio. I love Mustangs.

Thanks Mike! The bass is completely stock and a closet classic. It hasn't seen much use over the years. At least, not until I got it. The guitar had been modified a little and I restored it back to original specs. Someone had put a 1-ply black pickguard on it and replaced the switches with a 3-way mini toggle. I got rid of all that and brought it back to life. The pickups aren't original, I don't believe. I think they're old Strat pickups. They sound great so I elected to keep them. The pickguard is from a '64 Mustang and the switches are Switchcraft reissues. I haven't actually checked the pot dates, but I think all of that is still original. Regardless, it's a hot little guitar.

Beautiful Mustangs-good for you to restore the guitar back to original hardware-I hate it when people modify old guitars-nothing beats original. Too bad though about the pickups although Strat pups are a great replacement.

I'm not too concerned about the pickups. It's not difficult to find original 70's Mustang pickups.... yet. Maybe I'll track down a set and just keep them in case I decide to ever sell the guitar. There haven't been any permanent modifications to the Mustang so they can easily be swapped at any time.

Umm... that all said, I'm not likely to sell so please don't ask. ;)

I wouldn't think of asking you to sell your Mustang-I'm quite satisfied with my '65.

Nice set--I don't have a Mustang bass, but I love my Mustang.
