Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys is probably the most well-known Jaguar player with his iconic '63 Olympic White model. His classic tone can be heard on Fun, Fun, Fun and I Get Around.

I play metal riffs on my Tele all the time. It is a better metal guitar than my SSS Strats, and as good of one as my HSS and H Strats.

I gotta agree with JSJH. There is nothing better than a Jag or Jazz. And yeah, sippin' alcohol goes best. Don't guzzle.

As for the others:

Leo designed the Tele first and dealt mostly with a country/swing crowd. - 1946 or so.
The Strat was designed primarily because players complained about sore ribs from the Tele.

Both guitars are great for all kinds of music as are the Jazz and Jag. (Amp choice is important.) The Player determines what sounds great. I have heard some great blues come out of an offset guitar.

And although I have said before that the Jazz and Jag aren't designed for really aggressive playing, neither is the Strat. (Floyd Rose, roller nuts, etc... were all afterthoughts.)

I think it is because of the timeline that these guitars were designed on, that we pigeonhole these guitars into a specific genre.

Edit:
Here is Chris Sgruggs with a Jag playing country/rockabilly/ Americana?

I got a new AVRI '62 Jazzie and I'm diggin' it. I already have an '89 American Series Strat and that is a superb geetar, but the JM is quite uniquely different sounding. The JM pups are fuller and fatter sounding that other types of single coils. As with other fender gats, they are excellent with fender tube amps. They have shorter sustain, which in combination with the fatter sounding p'ups - which emphasize different tube amp harmonics, is excellent for playing on amps that have good verb and trem.

JMs are used a lot in surf music (which incidentally is alive and well and better than its ever been). They are also good for a lot of other styles as well, like funk, R'n'B, Blues, indie, caintry etc.

Jags have punchier pickups and are great for rock and surf music and indie etc and all that chrome just looks so kewl.

I have a '71 Jazzmaster that has definite mojo and works well with most styles. It is amazing for R&B/soul rhythm work, for slide and, yes, jazz. Works really well for fingerpicking and "out-there" stuff, as there are many places on the instrument to explore sonically (Sandy Bull, Nels Cline and Sonic Youth are proof of the JM's avant-greatness). As for aggressive styles? J. Mascis and My Bloody Valentine had a talent for making Jazzmasters bleed. Played through a good, fat overdrive in the neck position and a round-sounding amp can actually yield some luscious Les Paul sounds (had to whip out some ABB at practice the other night as a result). True, I'm a diverse player, and Jazzmasters are not for everyone to be sure, but I've been able to get about anything I want out of one (except for the gawdawful hum that I've tried everything to get rid of short of switching out the pickups, which I don't want to do because of the remarkable clarity they have).

Give an Electro Harmonix Hum De-Bugger a go. It works, here. High recommendation.

Yeah, the $121 part was zilch zero no no no fun. We have a big honkin sodium vapour streetlight bout 50 feet from the house and replaced most bulbs in the house with CFCs and dumped the incandescents.

Ergo, living in Hummsville, very bluesy if one is single coil-oriented.

Bought the Hum De-Bugger thing from Sam Ash almost the day it came out; had heard about it in pre-production stage. Purchased with understanding it would come back next day if bad news happened. That was '08 or so.

It did not go back and can even clean up the big Jazzmaster and Mosrite single coils.

Good news. Does it kill noisey ignitions on old vehicles as well?
