Hello, this is my first post. I'm trying to find reviews on the new Blacktop line by Fender. Particularly the Jazzmaster and the Jaguar. Has anyone played these and if so, what is your opinion of the SOUND? I'm a beginner who's looking to upgrade. I currently have a Squire Standard Tele but am honestly not a fan of single coil sound at the moment. I want to spend around 500 dollars on an upgrade. The Blacktops sound like a good deal for me because I get humbuckers and they are in my price range.

Oh yes and I'd rather not hear opinions from purists who view these as an abomination or as a bad sign of the direction the company is going or anything like that. There are too many of those opinions out there which cover up any actual reviews of these instruments. All I would like to know is how they play. Thanks! :)

These are really awesome guitars for the money. Just wait for Guitar Center to come out with discount coupons and order online. Watch out for the ones with adjustable bridges, mostly the ones with pair of humbuckers... Sometimes they are adjusted all the way down with no room for further adjustment. As far as single coil, go for the Jazzmaster even though it is single coil neck you can still get full humbucker sound with the bridge ...

Very nice guitars, especially for the money! I have traditional jags and jazzmasters and I still ended up using this guitar on tour for a couple months.

I've recently bought the Jag and really love it - it growls beautifully! That's correct about the adjusto-matic bridge though. I've got mine down almost as far as it will go and it's OK, but I prefer a really low action. I mentioned it to a luthier who said he often did a minor modification to lower the action on that type of bridge, which is used on a lot of Gibsons. When I put it in for a set up I will have it done.

Another thing to watch out for is the fit of the scratch plate. I saw one that was slightly offset so the bridge slot in the plate didn't fit exactly to the slot in the body.

Does anybody know why that slot is there?

I have a Blacktop Jazzmaster and I like it. The only thing I wasn't that thrilled with was the stock humbucker. I replaced it with a Gretsch Filtertron and I'm really happy with it. All three settings are usable now and it's versatile as a result. The only other thing I did was have it set up professionally and replaced the 9s with 10s.

Thanks to all for this info, I have been thinking of getting a Jazzmaster and wondered if it was worth it to check out the different types available. As usual, good info coming via this forum
