Hello there,
In the early sixties I bought a very fine second hand Fender King (pats pending) acoustic in the Netherlands. On the back a chrome plated badge with a number 3028. It has a rod to keep the neck straight. Inside on the back was printed that it was manufactured by fender in California, unfortunately the ink has almost faded . Although I searched the net for more information, nobody seems to know this guitar ever existed.
I will be very pleased if anyone could give me the any information about this
Best regards Karel Nijboer

The Fender King was made from '63-'65 and renamed Kingman in '65 and then made until'71.In 1970 it was made a bit smaller and some were made with 3 Wildwood(dyed wood)colours. The Kingman was reissued in 2006 and is still being made.Sorry I have no idea of the production numbers or of the dating method.

Yes, welcome to the forum. These guitars were designed by Roger Rossmeisl. I've heard different opinions about them. I always thought they were very cool but have never had my hands on one. To hear an example of one being played very well, do a YouTube search for "Neil LeVang" "Wild Dog".

Beautiful-something along the lines of the old Malibu.

From the picture, The bridge looks adjustable, with the three barrel saddles. That is very cool. It looks like there is a nice radius to the neck too, 9.5? or maybe 7.25? 8)

I also bought a used Fender King in the early 70's. It has serial #149 and so was likely made in 1963. I am attached to the guitar for personal reasons but as an instrument I don't like it. I have tried to maintain humidity (here in Montreal that can be a big problem each winter.) Nevertheless I have had to rebuilt the body twice because it seems to want to self-destruct. I used very reputable lutiers to repair it. I think the engineering design is the problem. Additionally, at the best of times this guitar is very quiet and doesn't have a very nice tone. However the neck is brilliant! I think it's like having a 1963 Stratocaster neck on a poor excuse for a body. I am seriously thinking about buying a Strat body and using this lovely old neck on an electric. Am I nuts? Any opinions?

Well, what can I say? I had this guitar for some 50 years and it never needed repair. Stays in tune quite well, and has a nice warm sound. I play it in a band doing 60s, together with my fender usa stratocaster.
Probably the dry climate is bothering you. Long time ago I crossed montana hitch hiking and noticed that all wooden furniture tended to fall apart there. Very beaytiful country though. Much different from my place in Holland (some meters below sea level)

I wouldn't take it apart if I were you, sounds like a silly idea. Maybe give it to somebody living in a moister place?
Good luck to you, and thanks for your mail.

I had a 68 Kingman back in the day and it was awesome. Seems like the 68 had a six-piece bridge, not three. Great tone. The only problem was that the "torsion" bar tended to make them a little quieter than other dreadnaughts.

The Fender Acoustic Custom Shop in CT makes new Kingman guitars, even in Antigua (without the old torsion bar) and they are pricey.
