Greetings,

I have just come in possession of the following guitar:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/53975063@N08/4988573022/

As you can see, the previous owner decided that the original red paint job was not to his liking and stripped it. It also claimed the Fender tag at the top of the neck. :(

As a ballpark, would restoring this be worth it? Mechanically (physically) this guitar is right. Also, what's fair value on the guitar in its current shape?

Thanks in advance!

I hate it when people who don't know the difference(and even worse those who do)alter a vintage guitar. The value immediately drops at least 40%, yes it makes that much of a difference. If your Jag had been left alone with the original Fiesta Red finish it would be worth about $5,000 even more if it had a matching headstock so unfortunately in its current state it would only be worth about $3,000.If you were to refinish it to the original Fiesta Red it may up the value by another 3-$500.I believe Fender will supply you with period correct decals if you send detailed pix of your guitar with the serial No.,date on the neck butt, pots and controls and pix of the pickup and control cavities.Hope this is of some help.

Congrats on a great guitar! If you didn't pay too much for it and you have a cool color scheme in mind then I would say to go for it! Finish-wise, the damage has been done and the collectability factor is way down there. Even if it had the original finish Jaguars just aren't worth that much unless they are dead mint. In its current state, especially without the original headsock decal, and going on cosmetics alone, my guess is that it's worth around $1500-$2000.

I have an Olympic White Jaguar from the same period. The neck is dated August '63 but the serial number indicates that it is a 1964 model. Who knows and who cares? Jaguars are mostly about the sound. I personally think that the sound of a vintage Jaguar, with both pickups on, is the quintessential surf tone. When I first plugged the Jag into my '64 Super Reverb and cranked it up I thought I had died, gone to heaven, and was standing right in front of Carl Wilson! :D

Here's my baby...

It would surely look better, but once the original paint is gone, it's gone for good.

There are people on e-bay that can get you the correct decal and a good lacquer paint job will let the body breath better.

If i were you, I would do it for sure, BUT I would be sure to disclose the repaint/restoration if I were to sell it. Take lots of pictures before, during and after to document it.

That sort of vandalism is incredibly frustrating. But I guess we're all guilty of mods somewhere along the line. It doesn't seem to be an issue at the time, but when the guitar is re-visited 40 years later..

Still, I guesss that's why non-molested vintage guitars are comparatively rare, and therefore potentially valuable.

The damage is long done. If it were mine, I'd get a sympathetic re-finish that is representative of a 48 year old Fender guitar. But it wouldn't be cheap!
