What the heck is Carl Wilson playing here? I have a lot of Fender books and I can't say that I have ever seen this particular guitar before. Was it a custom model or a prototype of some sort? This picture is from a 1972 Fender Guitars promo shoot taken at the studio in Baambrugge, Netherlands where they were recording their Holland album.

Looks like a Starcaster neck on a lucite body with Seth Lover humbuckers similar to the Tele Deluxe's.

Weird!

Location: In a house....unless I'm at work....then I'm in a shop.
From what I can see it looks to be a block inlay Jazzmaster neck, the 72 humbuckers from a Telecaster a acrylic body and a Mustang tremolo.

CBS did have an "Artist shop" and did so one off's, but I don't know if they did this one for sure.

They surely could have, then again Brain had the backs to have one built but a luthier.
That was about the time Ampro came out with there aluminum necked acrylic body guitars, it was a fad then.

Nor I. That rosewood "tuxedo" fretboard looks suspiciously like that of the still-born Fender Marauder.

The Fender logo on the headstock of the mystery guitar looks a lot bigger than the one on the Starcaster headstock. The "r" in Fender lines up with the G-string tuning peg while on the Starcaster headstock it lines up with the D-string, so my guess is that it just says "Fender" on the headstock, like the Marauder.

I see all of the above in this photo--it would most likely be a prototype, a promotional/trade show guitar or a custom job.
