Use to play bass years ago, now bought a fender acoustic and trying to learn cords. Some turn out well, in sound others sound muffled. Feel like I can't get rid of fat fingers sometimes hitting the string next to it. I'm past the hurting finger tips starting to get calloused now . Any Ideas? or does it just get better in time? Going to get lessons after i can learn some cords first. Plus I'M getting total knee surgery in a couple weeks and wont be able to get lessons till I'm walking better . Figured I could start learning with the CD that came with the Fender. While sitting around. Anyone ever go thru this finger thing? Thanks for any help. also HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL HERE ON THE FENDER SITE, I LOVE THIS PLACE. 8)

I hear you; I'm a 46 year old beginner who after years of dragging my feet and half-hearted attempts is determened to learn. What I've been doing is hitting the chords that give me trouble and concentrating on finger placement over and over. This may not be the easiest way but I have seen improvement. So good luck with the guitar and the knee. If you get any helpful tips post'em here so I can get some help (lol)

Same boat, most are good , but some seem like they will take time. I have looked at search engins and some say change strings, but different guitar. But most say what you said it take practice, practice , practice. Hey if it where easy everyone would be playing I guess. Thanks for the knee support. I go in for surgery Feb 11th . But it will be worth it , it sometimes feels like a tooth ache in both of them when trying to sleep. Im 56 and I love playing guitar now that i have more time. Played bass years ago in a band and i think i took it cause it was easier , and i was a teen on the run all the time. Good luck with your learning also . Paul G.

Hey guys let's see if I even slightly fit in to this post (I'm sixteen). I don't have fat fingers, but I have found some finger exercises helpful. Go on Justinguitar.com and he'll show you some exercises that might help. Hope you come out alright after surgery, I hear it can be bad or you could be fine. Either way, you'll be fine. And pray whether you're a Christian or not, because he hears you either way.

Hey guys. First time poster and complete newbie to the guitar. My question is how much do strings matter? I have heard of "softer" strings and I find myself in much the same situation. "BIG FAT FINGERS"

But another problem I am having is I get creases in my fingertips after a while which is allowing the fingers to surround the strings and then they lay up against the other strings. I cannot feel the tips of my right fingers as I am typing this, so I assume they are calloused enough. I really have to press hard on the strings to get the chords to play clear.

Do I need harder fingertips, or softer strings??

Thanks for any assistance.

Well softer strings maybe would be a nylon string acoustic guitar instead of steel string. You could also use a lower gauge like probably 9's would be good on an electric guitar if your having trouble playing notes and chords check those out.

Thanks, I have an acoustic guitar. I will take a look at trying the nylon strings out. Appreciate the help.

Well looks like a little practice works wonders . Like they say rome was not built in a day. Just having problems playing a C major now but that will come in time. I also get the creases in my fingers that are callased up . But wonder how guys that have been playing for years do do they also have like numb fingertips from playing? Don't really matter I'm having a ball learning to play. :D

yeah I remember trying to do chords for the first time, now I can do them as if they were single notes. WORK THAT PINKY! It's a very important finger that I never use, and now I regret it.

I got finger dimples too, but they seem to be getting better. I agree about the pinky I'm working hard with it but sometimes it seems to have a mind of its own.(lol) Also I didn't practice for three days and it was like starting over again when I did so let's keep going guys !

Well, I have pretty skinney fingers, but whatever the finger size it takes practice, practice, and more practice!! It should come in time... and, yeah, you need to work that pinkey!!!! It's a tough one! although, I hear that there are these finger strengthening things that work well...
