I am looking in to purchasing a family friends fender mustang. As described above it is a 1977 mustang in a blonde finish and what I believe to be an ash body.

As you will see from the photo's below, it is in average condition with less than average frets. Nevertheless, it is all original and must be the coolest looking guitar I have set my eyes on.

Any realistic valuations will be greatly appreciated, beaing in mind the guitar has not been strung for a few years now, and the frets are not in the best condition.

I've seen Mustangs of that age go for around $1000, but they were in better shape.
So I would realistically expect this one to be less than that.
Still if I had to sell mine--which is in better shape than this one--I'd price it around there.

But beyond that anything I'd say would be a guess.

But personally--based on the condition and other factors--such as work needed on it--I would be possibly willing to pay$400-500 on it--but that's me--I'm sure some would say less, and some more.
I'd have to have a closer look at it to say for sure--a personal inspection could raise or lower the amount I'd be willing to pay.[/i]

The body would more likely be poplar in a 77 than basswood.
But it might be neither.
My 78 Mustang is ash.

Hi There.

The valve would depend on if it has a case or not, it came with one when new, and a replacement would set you back a 100-150 ish.

With this in mind, with a case 900-1000 is a fair price, but it will need a fret job, and that will run 150-200 for a decent job.

I am assuming you want this as a player not a collector. If It were me, I would start with the 900 mark and deduct the case cost if it does not have one and I would deduct the cost of a fret job, then work out a fair price the two of you can live with.

thanks for all your estimates. I am pretty sure it is not olympic white, just the lighting when the photograph was taken makes it look so. It is a yellowish colour, very similar to a butterscotch tele but obviously more faded due to its age.

If it is a blonde would I be correct in saying that it has to be an ash body? As I have read that all blonde mustangs were ash.

Thanks again.

A '77 Mustang in mint condition would be worth upwards to $1,450 with original case so that one with the worn frets etc. would be worth considerably less probably $900-$950 tops and that's being very optimistic as it will need a refret but I wouldn't touch the finish other than a clean up as messing with the finish will cause the value to plummet faster than a skydiving Sumo wrestler.
