I'm guessing it changes the flow of the current through the pick ups, thus creating a different sound. Is that correct? Or am I way off base?

They are actually pretty easy. Each switch is 3 way. If you put them both either "up" or "down", they are in phase. (Doesn't matter if "up" or "down" - as long as both are in the same position they'll be in phase.) One "up" and the other "down" puts them out of phase, giving you a different sound. (It doesn't matter which is up or down, as long as they are opposite from each other you'll be out of phase.) In the middle position the pickup is switched off. You can turn off (middle position) either one depending if you want either bridge only or neck only. To play a single pickup, place one in the middle "off" and the other "on". (Again either "up" or "down" - doesn't matter.) Both switches in the middle and they are both off.

See - easy!

You mean when they're in the middle position, the phase switching is then disengaged? Or the pickup is completely off?

In the middle position the pickup is in the "off" position. Put one in the middle and the other either "up" or "down" and you'll get sound out of just the one p'up that is "up" or "down". Put both in the middle position and even though you are plugged into the amp, you'll get no sound.

The only way to be out of phase is to have one switch "up" and the other "down". Doesn't matter which switch is where, they just have to be opposite from each other.

OK, I got it now. For some reason I was thinking there was still a toggle switch to choose the pick up on the bottom, but obviously I wasn't looking real well. So it makes complete sense. What does that that rotary drum do though?

Rotary drum? You've got me there. I've got my Mustang in my hand - don't see anything that could be called a rotary drum.

On the pickguard are two p'ups and two 3-way switches. Below that is the bridge. To the right of the bridge is the volume control (top), tone control (middle), input jack for amp cable (bottom).

Please explain...
