Back in the day.. mega years ago (late 60's) I bought a used Fender Jaguar and played in a band. I absolutely loved it.

I got married, moved 1300 miles away from home, got a regular job & started having kids and sold my Jaguar & my Dual Showman for $200 in 1975.

Now I've got grandkids that want to learn how to play guitar, so I bought a Squire Stratocaster and am severely disappointed.

I taught myself how to play and can still play a few songs, but I just cant hold interest and try to show the g-kids how to plunk a few chords with the Squire.

Is there anything out there that will play like my old Jag? The Squires neck just doesnt feel right.

Hi. it's great you are playing again. Juguars have a 24" scale length as opposed to the Strat's 25.5" scale length. Maybe that is why the Squier Strat just quite doesn't feel right to you.

Fender is still making Jaguars. click here: http://www.fender.com/products/search.p ... guar%C2%AE

What is your budget? The prices on Fender's website are MSRP, higher than what you would pay at a store. Prices for vintage Jaguars like you had are sky high. Maybe find a modern used one if money is tight. There are used Fender Japan Jaguars out there too.

Other 24" scale guitars to consider:
Squier Duo-Sonic http://www.squierguitars.com/products/s ... 0303050589
Squier Jagmaster http://www.squierguitars.com/products/s ... 0320700500
Fender Mustang http://www.fender.com/products/search.p ... 0273706554

thanks for responding so quickly metropolis74!

I appreciate the links. My problem is, my budget is so low that it's almost nonexistent. I dont want to spend a lot of money to find out my grandkids arent as interested as they say they are.

I'm afraid I'll have to play the Squire until something better comes along. I might start checking pawn shops.

My backside is black & blue from kicking myself for selling my Jag & amp!

Thanks again.

Indeed!

That Dual Showman is probably worth two grand now.

Hi DBT I feel your pain,I have a 65 Jaguar and a 68 Bassman amp and 69 2-15 cabinet and I would be devastated if I had to part with them. It's too bad that your financial situation doesn't permit you to buy a new or vintage Jaguar.BTW you can still get pre CBS (65) Jaguars for less than $4000,a relative bargain compared to many vintage instruments. It's a pity that the Squire isn't cutting it for you,you could maybe pick up a decent used Mexican Strat for around $200.If you sell the Squire for $100 that may be doable for you.You can pick up used Japanese Jaguars in the $600+ price range and hopefully someday that may be possible for you. It's great though that you're getting back into guitar and I hope that you inspire your grandkids to pick it up as everybody should have music in their lives.Good Luck with all of it.

I greatly appreciate everyone's feedback.

I hope, from my original post, that everyone knows I'm a real novice. My mother had an old spanish guitar that she'd bought at an auction for $5. After she'd tune it & play one chord, it'd be out of tune. She taught me 3 chords. After that, being 12-13 yrs old, I'd go to dances and stand at the stage and try to memorize where the musicians were putting there fingers.

My first guitar & amp was bought from Sears. The guitar had 3 pickups and the strings where about a 1/4" high off the neck, but I didnt care, it was electric! The amp was a silver piggy back and I think it had 2 ten inch speakers.

In 1966, I knew a lead guitar player that played in the best band in the area. He wanted a new Mustang & sold me his Jag for $150. I dont know what year the Jag was, but it was in brand new condition. I often wonder what it'd be worth today. I've searched the internet and cant find the color. It was an orangish color. I purchased a used Dual Showman that year too. A band was breaking up & the guy needed money. It was like new also. I dont remember what I paid for it.

Man, ya'll are bring back some sweet memories!

If that Jaguar you bought for $150 had the original paint and was a custom colour(I can't recall any orangish colour so it had to be custom if original) it would be worth upwards of $7,000 since it had to be pre CBS.

I have a Mexican Strat that plays real well, not an American but better than the Japanse or Chinese models. Don't be discouraged about giving up the old stuff. I had a 69 SG Custom and a 76 American Strat stole from me in 1978. Bought a Flyin' V, it was all I could afford at the time. Put Dimarsios (spelling?) it it, added an SG Vibrato tail piece and made the best of it. Lost a 66 Jazzmaster to theft and a 66 les Paul in LA in the late sixities. Pick that axe up and create some callouses! Jam on! Use what you have, it's all good.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss Mike. I have no sympathy for thieves.

I'm fortunate to know where mine is at and who's got it. The trouble is, it's not for sale. And, I'm sure if he ever did decide to sell it, it would be more than I could afford to pay.

Me either. Have you looked on Ebay? I was just checking them out, there are some very affordable Fender electrics all around the country. Try checking in your location so you could do a "hands on" before buying. Good luck with your search! :D

OK ya'll, I'm still digg'n for information on what I actually had back in the day.

I was finally able to contact the person who bought my Jag and he supplied me with the following; unfortunately, it isnt much.. I dont think.

92789 is stamped on the back neck plate.
DES 187826 is on the front head along with PAT 2,960,900 2,972,923

Can anyone read anything into this?

thanks as always for the input.

The 9XXXX serial number seems to correspond to an instrument built in late '62 or '63.
