When will Fender put out a '335 clone? Didn't they have one a while back (starcaster / starfire?).

Yeah...(sobbing) The original Starcaster is my dream axe. I could have grabbed one on ebay a few years back in mint condition for a little over a grand...I just couldn't make it happen at that point in time. I look at them now and some of them are bringing $4-5k!!

I know it's apples and oranges compared to a 335, and it may not be a bigger-bodied semi, but the '72 Thinline has become one of my faves. Many gearheads speak negatively about the next generation wide-ranges (murky, dark, unresponsive etc), but I disagree and can get about anything I could ever want out of them. If you're looking for some nice harmonic overtones, you can get 'em with that guitar. Check one out if you get a chance and have not already...just a suggestion if you're like me and bleed Fender!....won't break the bank either. Take Care...KJC

The Coronado was Fender's biggest answer to the 335 back in the 60's and 70's. One or two pickups, 12-string, even basses with one or two pickups, with or without the specially tree-dyed Wildwood!! They looked fantastic, but I couldn't afford one as a kid.

Maybe they didn't sound so great. They're not high-dollar vintage collectibles.

Guys, thanks for comments. I did check out that semi-hollow tele a while back but I thought the tones were dark. I'll have to try it again.

The Coronados in that link look fantastic.

Come on Fender! Bring back the semi-hollow body 3x5 style guitar. :D

Ibanez and others have demonstrated that inexpensive semi-hollowbodies sell.

I keep wondering when Fender is going to have Guild start making electric guitars again. Guild made several very nice semi-hollow's and hollowbody's that were the equal to anything Gibson makes.

I've got a '65 Guild CE100D that's pretty much an ES-175 with mini-humbuckers. It's got a great 60's Gretch-like tone. I loved the old Starfires (335 clone).

Yes, Fender! You should let Guild start making those guitars again.

I fell in love with the look of the Starcaster when they first came out in the mid to late '70's, but was never able to find or afford one (not new, anyway).

I've had to make do with my MIJ/CIJ '72 Tele Thinlines, which isn't nearly the same guitar of course but has a few similarities. I love them, and never had any problems with them being dark and muddy sounding.

For some reason, the Coronados never turned me on, even when they were cheap in the '80's and '90's.

I bet it will be a while before we see another series like the Coronados or Starcasters.

I used to have a 1967 Coronado (in 1992), and while it looked REALLY cool (best F-hole shape EVER), they were not the greatest guitars. The pickups were way too harsh (and I love RIckenbackers if that gives you any idea of how harsh), and the weird tremolo would not stay in tune for a second. It made the action feel very soft. It also had the worst neck-dive I have ever experienced. I owned a Gibson ES-330 (stolen from my house) before the Coronado, and it balanced quite well for a guitar with no center block. I was so excited to find a Coronado, that I didn't even notice these things until after I had taken it home. Sadly I ended up selling it, after realizing that my Strat sounds, and feels SO much better.

I never thought much of the Coronado in terms of sound or playability but they did look nice and the Wildwood dye job (yes, in the growing tree, as I understood it) was one of the coolest-looking finishes ever.
