I've got a Fender Toronado (I think) guitar. But I'm just wondering of authenticity, how much fender is in this fender. Yellow finish, maple fretboard and neck, Fender Made In USA in headstock, in the rear - serial number "MZ 2146961". Below few photos of my guitar:

P.S. sorry for my language :)

Looks fake to me, but I don't know much about these models. The one's I've seen had different tuners on them, just standard Fender Tuners. Those tuners look like ones that come on a lot of fakes.
And The serial number lettering looks wrong.

I've made few more pics of my who knows fender. Maybe it's luthier's copy but it sounds amazing, i had many guitars but never from fender's. I think the parts are original, for example bridge - in every saddle "FENDER", knobs looks the same as in the original, frets are new, pickups - Fender (atomic ?) in the neck, seymour duncan sh-4 in bridge. I'll change tuners to GOTOH or vintage Fender.

sorry for the quality... :?

most toronados that came in that color had a pearl pickguard.
its possible it could be pieced together, but the headstock label and serial# look fishy..
depending on how much you paid it may not matter, but toronados in the states go for 200-600 all day..

I got mine for circa 480 $ (1600 PLN) previous owner said, that this guitar came from california in 2002, and guitardaterproject.org says that it was produced between 2002 and 2003. Anyway it's great guitar, when I look at neck in some angle I see many "tiger-stripes" like in expensive music man guitars. I'm little sad cause it's not an original one but I didn't compare this to other toronado's :?

The Toronados were made from 1999-2006 and the 1999-2001 had atomic humbuckers, after that they had P-90 pups and a way smaller pickguard. The P-90 models also had a separate bridge with a stop tailpiece. It is unlikely that anyone would go out of their way to fake a Toronado as the price that they currently go for($400-$500)it wouldn't be worth the bother. I think that your guitar could be very well legit and the previous owner did the mods to suit himself.I hope this clears up the matter for you.BTW as for the pickguard-the colour is right as black was also available on blonde Toronados.

lol
once again pay close attention to the headstock.
all toronados have a decal on the far right end..i dont see that on this headstock..
its still a good guitar, if its comfortable thats great..
i doubt someone would take the time to fake a toronado, but if they did, great job..

I just looked up a 2004 Frontline catalogue and the Toronado American Special Series had no smaller decal near the end of the headstock. There could be a possibility that there was a mix up at the factory and it wasn't put on or maybe it could have been scrapped off for some reason. The rest of the decals appear to match those in the Fender Frontline so it's still a strong possibility that it's legit as I haven't heard of any overseas makers producing Toronado copies. Most foreign copy makers just produce copies of popular more expensive models and where the Toronado was neither expensive or a big seller it's doubtful that it's design would be copied as it most likely would prove not to be profitable.

Look at the Truss Rod adjustment. USA or Mexico made guitars never used that style. The Serial # should be all the same size font and no spaces and those guitars never used those style of tuning machines. Guitar could have a replacement neck with added decal the serial # and factory body and parts.

There were American, Mexican and Korean Toronados. None had a maple fretboard. That appears to be a Mexican Fender Toronado body with a replacement neck and pickguard. Original pickguard would have been tortoise shell or white pearl depending on the guitar's body color.

The final Mexican Toronados looked different still, and even these had various differences, including covered or non-covered pickups.

I have a Cor-Tek contract GT (with the atrocious racing stripes and OEM SD Pearly Gates+ and '59 humbuckers) and one of the last Mexican Deluxe series ones.

Unfortunately, the Mexican one was a factory reject that was never completed and was accidentally shipped to MF as new A-stock when they were closed out.

Exactly like this:

Image

It was covered in white polishing compound and the control cavities were edged with red cutting compound. There was also paraffin wax all over the back. The nut had never been cut, a couple of parts were damaged or missing. Unfortunately, there were no more left for an exchange, so I kept this mess intending to send it to Fender to be completed (!) under warranty, as it seemed like it could eventually be a decent instrument. I never got around to dealing with this hassle and it's still around here in its original condition, save for having the compound cleaned off. :(

The Toronado I really wanted was the original US one in yellow finish with the P-90ish pickups. I've never even seen one in real life, though. They were very attractive instruments in the pictures.
