I have a beautiful all-original mid 1970's Fender Mustang with maple neck. Looking to update the pick-ups for a more modern sound. Was thinking about single coils but I could be convinced to go with a stacked humbucker or rail.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Mark

hmm... Curious. I expected some kind of response :?

Surely there must be somebody out there that has upgraded the pick-ups on a Mustang. My plan would be to hold on to the originals, of course.

I know most strat PUs fit right in. Just wondering what the best choices are considering the Mustang wiring config.

It's OK if y'all don't dive it at once... :P

When you say "modern sound", that doesn't tell us much. The stock Mustang pickups are essentially Strat pickups with flat poles. Soundwise they would be like the '69 custom shop pups. Modern music usually uses a lot more gain, so you'd want to install something hum canceling like a rail, stack, or Lace Sensor. You'll want a bridge pickup that is fairly "tight" sounding because the 'stang bridge pickup is further away from the bridge than on a Strat which is what most pickups sonic descriptions are referenced to. For example, I think a Duncan Hot Rails would be too thick for that. Maybe a Cool Rails or JB Junior. The Hot Noiseless might actually sound good in that configuration as well.

+1

Put the guitar back in the case and slip it under the bed.

then go to the store and get a MIM reissue and drop some humbucker or lace sensors in it.

just don't hack up a classic like that one.

I don't want to hack up this guitar -- no way. It's just these pickup have lost some punch or something. Really, this guitar doesn't pack the sonic wallop of my Strat of the roughly the same era -- I shouldn't expect it too (ref Guitarfixer's comments). But this Mustang does have a GREAT surf sound.

To satisfy my need for a strat back-up , I'm making a build-it-yourself-o-caster...

So I'm gonna leave it as is :D

Agreed--completely--yeah the Mustang's pickups aren't as loud as a lot of people would like--but that's why amps have volume controls.

Hi,
Anyway,my gues is that the pups in this Mustang aren't all that original, could it be that they where changed, maybe by a previous owner, or at least where the covers changed.Mustangs came with pup covers that where closed, the polepieces wheren't visable.
Grtz.
