I've been playing an accoustic guitar for a while now, still consider myself a beginner. I've seen a couple pros play in the church I go to and I love the sounds they can make on the lead and bass guitars.

I'd like to get a basic amp and guitar. Any suggestions?

I was about to write 65 mustang, but since you want to spend less than $500, maybe a squier bullet? Check out the squier range, they have some cool guitars there.

Hi gimli7! I would recommend one of the Squier Classic Vibe guitars for about $350:

Squier Classic Vibe 50s Stratocaster

Squier Classic Vibe 50s Telecaster

My first amp was a Roland Micro Cube ($130), and I recommend it.

I hope this helps. Good luck! 8)

Or if you want a Fender amp, you could do it this way:

Squier Deluxe Stratocaster ($280)

Fender Vibro Champ XD amplifier ($200)

FYI, the Squier models are ranked from top to bottom as follows:

Classic Vibe Series
Vintage Modified Series
Artist Series
Obey Graphic Series
Deluxe Series
Standard Series
Affinity Series
Bullet Series
SE Series

I have a Squier Standard Stratocaster. If I had it to do over again, I would have gone with at least a Deluxe Series. But no matter what you choose, I'm sure you'll be satisfied. Check out the Squier guitar forum for more pictures and opinions. Good luck! 8)

Thanks Russian Racehorse! I think I'll stick with the first suggestion: get the better guitar and a basic amp. Then later Ill upgrade to a better amp :)

An MIM Standard Stratocaster will take you anywhere you want to go. Get a great setup and basic amp to begin with.

The MIM Strat gets my vote too and there are also great bargains to be had in used amps as a lot of people sell perfectly good amps as they move on to better or more powerful ones-Happy Hunting.

Squier Bullet is prolly the best way to go just in case you don't take to it.

I get what your saying, BUT if I may suggest stepping up just a little more to get a better set-up.

A MIM strat can be had for 499.99\and the Champion 600 amp can be had for 149.99 at any Guitar center (Or most other dealers for that matter).

While I get this is 650, the MIM is a far better playing guitar.

not always true....
in most cases higher grade squiers like the classic vibes and vintage modifieds play alot better than lower grade fenders like the mim standard.
