My 18 yr. old son is using a Squire M-80 guitar with a Vox amplifier. He likes to play bits and parts of a lot of classic songs. If he just plays at home, are there any legitimate reasons for upgrading either of these? ie..do some guitars or amps offer additional sounds that his does not?

Welcome to the forums!

upgrading is always cool, even if just playing at home. i have 6 guitars and i just play at home. all my guitars offer different things so i think it would be cool if you got him a new amp or guitar to let him be more versitile.

Welcome,

Effects processors or pedals are a nice "upgrade". they will provide lots of other sound effect options.

Tanner: Are you saying that every guitar sounds different? Sorry for my ignorance, and I am being honest. You have 5 el. guitars lined up, and each sounds different? Or, does each offer something different..god knows what???
People buy a new guitar (or 4 more) b/c something sounds different??? I can see acoustic vs electric, but just looking at electric, aren't all strings the same material and length or tightness??? Where does the diff sound come from???

Bastard: Ok, I can understand the mixer or pedals offering new sounds. Thank you.

both, each guitar sounds a little different and each guitar offers something diiferent. no, not all guitar strings are the same, there are many different types and sizes of guitar strings. the different sound of guitars come from many different influences, the body wood, pickups, electronics, fretboard wood and harware and even your amp effects how the guitar will sound.

Hope that helps :D

Thank you, Tanner...It's amazing how much I have to learn. Now, I just wish my hearing was perfect so I could actually hear the differences. :?
