i came across a fender competition mustang and have some question about it. im a huge collector and very technical on specs so this is why im asking.
i understand they were only made for a short period.
i found a blue one with the stripes, and bar over trem..
this guitar has a 500000 serial number?
also the pickguard is white, most i see have the pearl?
has it possibly been modified?
the guitar on has a few nicks on back and a few spot nothing major. headstock and neck are mint.
let me know your thoughts thanks

The Competition Mustang was released in 1968, up until 1973 and has a white pickguard. The one you are looking at with a 6 digits serial starting with a 5 is a 1973. Can you post pictures?

Well, at the end of 72, the Competition Mustang was discontinued and so was the pearl pickguard in favor of a white-black-white pickguard.

Is that the only picture you have? It would be interesting to have detailed pictures to valid authenticity. Does the seller claim originality?

yeah i know what youre saying. this is the only pic i got, i just have the serial# aside from that. ill probably look at it again and get better pics. its clean, and the original owners, claims its been in the family for years. they have the fender label sling, keys for the case, and thats about it.

Well, it sounds like if the guitar is close by for inspection and the price is fair it may be a deal. You definitely seem interested in it, who wouldnt, I like my 76. Let us know how it goes.

Officially Compstangs were released in 1969 (not 68). You may find stamps that say 68, but thats just when that neck/body was made. They were not sold until 1969. Color matching headstocks were only from 1969-71.

For all Fenders (not just stangs) 200,000s to 300,000s is 1968-70.

If the serial number is in the 500,000s its a 1974-76.

http://fendermustangstory.com/default.htm is a good resource.
