Hey guys,

I've been taking guitar lessons at my local uni as a short course. I have a pretty basic guitar at the moment and looking to upgrade. What models should I be looking at?

Thanks
Jason

What do you have at the moment? It's hard to advise on an upgrade without knowing what you want to upgrade from!

If you are a beginner I would recommend spending no less than £100-150 to get enough quality without going overboard.

I got myself a Fender CD-140. It's pretty decent for beginners. Not too expensive either.

My nephew is becoming quite the musician at 11. He has won several awards for the piano and has now become interested in playing the guitar.

I would like to know if anyone could recommend an acoustic guitar that wouldn't break the bank.

Thanks for the help.

I don't know if this helps, since you posted in acoustics, but when my son turns eight I'll probably be getting him a Squier Strat mini. Something he can have a lot of fun on and won't break the bank... or likely break at all for that matter.

I've known some folks who have done well with nylon string guitars after playing the piano. Your nephew probably has the advantage of great finger reach from piano practice and most nylon stringed guitars lend themselves well to that reach.

I'd go with a used Ovation for about $150. Nice neck for small hands, they stay in tune, and low action that is easy on the fingers.

Take the kid with you and go hunt pawn shops and consignment type shops or goodwill type places. There are deals to be had, but you have to know how to do setups because most instruments found at pawn and second hand shops are sorely in need of them.

How did you peg them? Just curious. Of course going to a pawn shop would not be my first choice!
Never mind! I found out!

my first guitar was a cheap ibanez which are great for starters.

seagulls are great to. A little more expensive but the quality is amazing on these guitars. They are canadian and are made with quality products.

400 bucks is alot but i can guarantee you if you buy the ibanez you will be buying a better acoustic in a year or two.

Either way though an ibanez and seagull are great buys. Go to a guitar center or local shop to play some guitars

I play mostly acoustic i have a ibanez, a seagull, and a gibson j-45.
