hey guys, im new to the forums. im thinking of getting a jaguar or a mustang (although possibly a strat, tele, or jazzmaster too) to upgrade from my squier deluxe hot rails.

i like the body of the mustang a little better, but i like that i can get a jaguar with humbuckers.
so which one should i get?

i play classic rock, zeppelin, hendrix, sabbath, cream, etc.
but im not too picky on trying to imitate their sounds, if i was id just get a gibson..

whats most important to me, is a good guitar for playing lead. i love playing solo's, so i need a guitar with good sustain, and is good with pull-offs and hammer ons

one with a mellower tone would be nice. other than that, my only other dislike as far as i can think of is really fat necks, like in sg's..but as far as i know most fenders dont come with fat necks.

my price range is 500-800ish n i dont mind buying used..or waiting for sales.

oh, and an off topic question, but damm! is it just me or did fenders go WAY up in price.?

i remember when i was 14 and broke, all i could afford was a squier but i would look at the fenders, and i remember they were a lot cheaper jus like 3 years ago.

i recall the std mim strats were 400, those only went up 100. but wow, mustangs used to be way cheaper. i have a magazine from 2007 in which they were 699, n im pretty sure they used to be even cheaper sometimes.
and ok VERY IMPORTANT! how much were JAGUARS? i remember they used to come im more cool colors like turquoise, green, blue etc, and didnt they used to be around 1000? their like 1700 now, but idk if its the same model. anyone buy one back then?

A Mustang would not suffice for the kind of music you play. The pickups, for one thing, would have to be the first thing to go, in favor for something like Duncan Hot Rails.

Your best bet is a Classic Player Jaguar HH. Should you need single coil tones, what would usually be your rhythm circuit on a SS Jaguar is actually a nifty blendable coil tap, I believe (correct me if I'm wrong on that; I've had more seat time with regular Jazzmasters and Jags versus the new CP HH Jag).

But, if you do like the body and contouring of the Mustang more, look into a used Fender Cyclone. One Tex-Mex single coil, one Atomic (?) humbucker. The neck scale is a touch longer than either the Jag or Stang, but that might be alright if you don't have oddly built hands like I do (big palms, shorter fingers) and need the shorter scale to fret more complex chords. Usually, a used Cyclone will set you back as much as $400 bucks for a really clean example, so not a hell of a lot of cash there for a nice guitar. If you don't care about a few nicks and dings, you can sometimes get one for about $275.

Sorry Squier fans, but I wouldn't recommend this guy buy Squier's version, although they too can be had for little to nothing used.

I've had a Mustang for years (since 73, and that replaced a 65) and I agree that you probably don't want one for your style of music. I used mine mainly for rhythm and relatively straight forward leads such as in mid to late 60s era surf and country music.

You won't get the gain or power you need and you'd have to work at driving an amp to get distortion like the groups you mention. Once I started playing rock in the late 60s, I got an LP clone and the Mustang became my backup guitar.

Here I am being a nay-sayer:

Actually a Mustang sounds great for early Zeppelin.
Communication Breakdown sounds better on a Mustang than on humbuckers.

But overall for what you've mentioned, I'd say get a Strat and a Les Paul.
Or alternatively, a Strat style guitar and a Les Paul style guitar.

On the other hand, be bold, and play it on something unexpected.

People questioned why I bought a Mustang--and I do prefer humbuckers, so I didn't use it as much for playing in bands/jamming, etc--but when it was right--it was right.

Yes the pickups are weaker--but you have an amp, and you can crank it.

You can get sounds nobody would expect out of a Mustang--and they sound great.

agreed and you CAN get great distortion if you have the right amp and pedal etc.... ive only found one song unplayable on the stang and its only because it doesnt have a toggle switch (Know Your Enemy by RATM, incase youre wondering)

I am amazed when experienced guitar players question if a Mustang will work with distortion.
I can see a newer guitarist asking this, but an experienced one should know better.

It's a matter of experimenting, and finding what works for the song and in the context of who you're playing with.

But Mustang or Jag--you're going against the grain--which creates more variety in the world.

Hi Zontar I'm a Mustang fan too,I've had no problem playing Hendrix on my Mustang all you need to do is turn up your amp to compensate the weaker pups but it's a perfectly good guitar as is for playing rock. Granted the Mustang may not be everyone's cup of tea but it has certainly worked for me,I just plug it into my Big Muff Pi,Vox Wah and Marshall and wail away.

No one's saying you can't get a good distorted Mustang tone. The fact the pickups can sometimes be of questionable tonal quality can lend to a unique distorted tone.

But for the stuff this guy wants to play, I really would advise him to buy a Cyclone if he's into the "student guitar" body style.

What about switching strat pickups to a Mustang? What to expect?

I'm a Gibson player who's been suffering GAS for the Fender tone for a long time. Recently I tested a 65 reissue Mustang and liked the body style and the neck pup sound was ok, though not great. There's a bargain available, but I'm not sure. As a comparison I tried a Squier Classic Vibe Thinline Tele which sounded simply great (better for my ears than MIM standard Tele).

Is it possible to get Strat sounds or Tele neck tone with different pickups in a Mustang. This one sounds promising on the neck pickup, but there's not many notes to listen:

Well then that settles it, that was the answer I was looking for.....
