Hi, can somebody help with dating my Fender Mustang,
It's in a Lake Placid blue finish with ligt blue competition stripes, it has a white plain pickguard (not pearloid), black pups, knobs and white plastic Klusons tuners.
The serial number on the neckplate is 544654 and the neck is stamped 45000834 and S or 5 ( i'm not sure) written in pencil. The neck is stamped with the name HERB G.

Can anybody help me solve this mystery?
I am missing some parts and it would be nice to know from what year the Mustang is so I can search for the right piece.

i dont know how to date by serial numbers, but i can tell you right off the bat its a 1968-1972.... i know that because thats when they did competition stripes...... also, if it has a matching headstock that would mean 68- early 71

Thank you very much for prompt reply.
So this is difinetly a CBS Mustang..not because there is somthing wrong about that, just the fact that the routing of the body's changed in the CBS era, like 65 pickguards wo'nt fit 68-72', I wasen't sure now I can chase after the correct parts.
Thanks...

A serial number in the 500,000s means it was made between 1974 and 76.

Maybe the guy put it on himself, probably at the same time he put his name on the headstock, or else he had it custom made.

yeah probably.... i dont think custom made is very likely because werent mustangs considered the starcaster (that starter pack piece of crap) of their time?

According to a Fender book I have by noted Fender expert A.R.Duchossoir the 500,000 serial No. Fenders denote a production date between Oct.73 and Oct.76.I think that you can pretty well take anything that he says as gospel.A lot of people added competition stripes either painted on or decals to give their Mustangs a "cooler"look.Mustangs although a cheaper guitar always were looked upon as great little guitars and a lot of professional musicians of the day(I know because I was aound way back then)used them as they were/are versatile guitars and were never looked upon in the same light as the Starcaster.I used my Mustang a lot when gigging in those halcyon days(even though I also had my Strat and Jag) and nobody ever said anything negative about my great little guitar, usually quite the opposite.

You should edit your serial in the post before some enterprising counterfeiters subjugate it.

Just an FYI: Wiki is wrong. Competition Mustangs were first issued in 1969, not 1968.
