Can someone tell me about the A B or C you see stamped on the end of necks along with the date ? Is it to do with the width of the neck ?
I got a bad itch about Mustang style guitars and ended up with a Bronco , 2 Musicmaster 11's and a Mustang but the one I really like to play is one of the Musicmasters and I think it is because of the wider neck . I have only had one of these guitars in pieces so I was wondering about the ABC .

Welcome.

They denote neck width: "A" is the narrowest, "B" is normal and "C" is the widest.

I know this is an old thread . . . I only just joined the forum. But if anyone is still interested there are actually A, B, C and D necks.

In February of 1964 Fender introduced a selection of custom neck sizes:

A: A narrow 1 1/2" neck

B: The standard 1 5/8" neck

C: 1 3/4" neck

D 1 7/8" neck

All non-standard necks (ie A,C, D) could be ordered for an extra 5% above the retail price.

A & C necks are rare, and D necks are Very rare as virtually no one ordered one.

You're welcome. I've never actually seen a D neck, but I am certain that they exist.

Bassist in my band has a 1960 Precision with a D neck. It's ffing big.

Where can I find a 1.5" nut for an A neck? I have a duo sonic that needs a nut, just cannot find one!

The easiest thing would be to get a luthier to make a nut for you. If you find a good luthier they can make a nut that will be a perfect fit and you will not be able to tell it apart from the original.
