So I was always under the impression that my 1998 Fender Deluxe Series Toronado in Sunburst had an alder body with an ash veneer. In fact, I even corrected someone on these forums who claimed it was a Poplar body.

Now, I'm not so sure. I've read from multiple places, include this one: http://www.edroman.com/techarticles/betterstrat.htm

He says that a lot of Fender's guitars from the 90's with sunburst bodies had poplar cores with ash veneers.

Now I'm not so sure about my guitar. The Fender Serial number lookup guy's spec sheet said alder with an ash veneer, but I am so curious I just need to know.

Anyone know if the Poplar bodies extended into Toronados?

I own one of the first production Toronados...a '97 in sunburst and its supposed to have a poplar body with maple veneer...later in '98 they supposedly went to an ash veneer...my '00 deluxe in orange i'm pretty sure has a full poplar body with no veneer, and the american '02 and '04 models i own have alder bodies.

Who is " the Fender serial number lookup guy"?? If you ask consumer relations by email, they will give you the specs on your guitar.

And what they tell you, you can take to the bank. Who cares what Ed Roman says?

The fender lookup guy is exactly what you described him as, I just came to know the process as serial number lookup when in reality it is just a spec sheet. The specs said alder body.

Sorry, I'm new here, but am I not supposed to trust Ed Roman, or is that some sort of cool inside joke that flew right over my head?

No, not at all. It is a just a question of credibility. Do you want to believe the company that made your guitar, and has no reason to mislead you, or do you want to believe someone else?

I'm gonna have to side with Troublecall.
Ed Roman has some nice guitars, but he also is in the buisness of competing with Fender.
He makes quite a few copies of Fenders and is gonna say whatever.
