When I turn the tone pot past 8 on my 76 Mustang, the volume turns off, nothing from either pickups. Below 8, no problem, luckily I usually roll off the tone up a bit on most of my guitars anyway.

Do I have a dirty tone pot? If it was a pickup winding issue it would only be happening on one pickup, unlikely both pickups would act similar.

Any idea anyone?

It has nothing to do with your pickup.

Yes, your tone pot could be dirty but usually, the entire sweep is affected. More likely, you have a short somewhere. Check the wiring of and around your capacitor and the tone pot. Also, check the capacitor itself for cracks, etc. If you haven't found the shorting problem in the wiring or the cap, chances are your tone pot has had it.

Glad it's not the PUs since they're original. I know that sometimes if turning the tone knob all the way off cuts the pickup then the pickup wiring may be damaged.

It's actually for sale right now but if I change my mind and decide to keep it I'll try to figure it out. Starting by spraying some contact cleaner in there.

Good luck.
