I have a 1956 Fender Musicmaster (the date on the neck heel is 6-56) with all the original hardware and the original case. Sounds sweet, huh? There’s one huge problem - the previous owner butchered a homemade refinish on the guitar. It’s bad. It almost looks like it was painted with a brush! Fire engine red.

I have to strip it and refinish - I can’t leave it like this. Any ideas or opinions on how to do this without ruining what little value it has left? Also, I’d like to do this myself so, any words of advice or links to refinishing guitar guides for idiots would be much appreciated.

thanks

It's a pity about your Musicmaster as this was the 1st year of issue,I would suggest that you use the original colour that was Desert Sand.I'm no expert on refinishing even though I refinished my 65 Mustang that had met with the same fate your musicmaster did.The main thing is to get the wood as smooth as possible and use a high quality primer for the paint to adhere to.I painted mine with a spray can paint and it turned out pretty good but for a guitar as old as yours I'd seek the advice of Ceri or another one of our restoration gurus.

Most definitely send Ceri a message, that fellow seems to have an adept amount of knowledge when it comes to these things.

Sounds like an amazing guitar by the way  I have a '62 that I adore - it's hard to imagine there are ones still 6 years older than it.

So who's Ceri and how would I reach this person?

Also, I'll try to get some pics posted soon.

Thanks!

Ceri is one of the top posters on the forum, very knowledgeable fellow.

You can reach him by clicking on "Memberlist" and running a search using the criteria "Total posts" in "Descending" order. He'll be right up there on the list.

Edit: I'm not sure how to message someone via this method.

Just to go this thread:

http://www.fender.com/community/forums/viewtopic.php?t=30747&start=870

Because it's a thread he started, he posts actively in it and you should be able to leave any questions for him there.
